Is your crypto at risk? Avalanche, Polygon, and ZkSync Discords hacked!

  • Recent crypto breaches hit Polygon, Avalanche, and ZkSync Discord servers, causing financial losses.
  • Token values declined, emphasizing the need for user vigilance despite security measures.

As a seasoned crypto investor who has witnessed the rollercoaster ride of this dynamic and often unpredictable market, I find myself once again reminded of the importance of vigilance and caution. The recent breaches on Polygon, Avalanche, and ZkSync Discord servers have served as yet another stark reminder that no platform is immune to malicious attacks.

Over the past weekend, the crypto community suffered a substantial setback due to a sequence of coordinated assaults on prominent networks.

In less than two days after a hack occurred on Polygon’s [MATIC] Discord server, both the main Discord servers for Layer-1 network Avalanche and Layer-2 blockchain ZKsync suffered independent attacks through separate exploits.

Avalanche’s Discord compromised

25th August saw Avalanche’s official X account on record, disclosing a breach in their Discord server. They cautioned users to steer clear of engaging with any links shared within the server.

As a researcher, I uncovered evidence from screenshots shared within the Avalanche Discord group, which suggests that malicious individuals disseminated deceptive links. These links were advertised as legitimate “distribution” methods for Avalanche tokens, falsely guaranteeing free AVAX to token holders and community participants.

About an hour past, Ben Well, the community leader of Avalanche, announced that the team successfully diagnosed and fixed the problem, and they were currently working on getting the server back to its regular functioning state.

The event left a significant mark on the price of Avalanche’s native token, AVAX, causing it to drop to $26.22 following a stretch of favorable market activity.

However, recent data shows AVAX has since recovered slightly, trading at $27, though it still experienced a modest 0.07% decline in the last 24 hours.

ZkSync’s Discord fell into the same prey

While the crypto community was still digesting the news about Avalanche’s security incident, it was revealed shortly thereafter that the Discord server of ZkSync had also fallen victim to a hack, happening only an hour after the initial report.

Hackers posted deceptive links promoting a fake “round 2 airdrop” scheme, falsely promising users free ZK tokens.

Although ZkSync hasn’t publicly commented on the exploit at X, some team members have confirmed the incident within their Discord community.

What happened to Polygon’s Discord channel?

On August 24th, Mudit Gupta, as Chief Information Security Officer at Polygon, announced a security incident and advised users to avoid clicking on any links that originated from the affected channel until the problem has been completely resolved. (For those new to this, on the 24th of August, Mudit Gupta, who is in charge of information security at Polygon, acknowledged an incident and recommended that users should not engage with any links distributed within the compromised channel until the issue gets fixed.)

In the aftermath of an attack, a user identified as ValidatorK claimed they suffered a substantial loss of approximately $150,000 worth of Ether, following interactions believed to be based on what appeared to be an authentic post in Polygon’s Discord forum.

The incident likewise impacted Matic, leading to a drop in its value. Currently, Matic is falling by more than 5% in the last 24 hours, with a trading price of approximately $0.5224.
