IT: Chapter 3 Movie Hinted At By Welcome To Derry Co-Creator

Barbara Muschietti, a key creative behind the movie It: Welcome to Derry, has hinted that a third It film, It: Chapter Three, might actually happen, giving fans something to look forward to.

Stephen King’s scary world of It has been explored in multiple movies and TV shows. The recent remakes, It: Chapter One (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019), were particularly popular with fans. Now, director Andy Muschietti has hinted that a third movie might be possible.

Though the first season of It: Welcome to Derry has finished, many storylines could be continued. One intriguing possibility involves Pennywise the clown (Bill Skarsgård), who strongly suggests he didn’t truly die in It: Chapter Two. He even tells young Marge (Matilda Lawler) that Richie and his friends will ultimately be the ones to defeat him.

He followed up with a disturbing remark, questioning whether the event was truly a death or a transformation. This single comment opens up numerous possibilities for a third film. In a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, director Muschietti revealed that there are still many unanswered questions and new characters to explore within the It universe, suggesting the potential for a trilogy.

Many viewers get frustrated by unanswered questions and plot inconsistencies, but the show’s creator embraces them. She views these gaps as chances to develop new storylines, inspired by Stephen King’s writing style, which often left things open to interpretation. While these inconsistencies might not have been deliberate on King’s part, she and her co-creator brother, Andy Muschietti, found them to be a fortunate source of inspiration.

The Muschietti siblings have loved the novel It since they were young. Barbara Muschietti noted that their understanding of the story has changed over time – now in their 50s and with families, they see it differently. She believes their audience is constantly evolving, and she and her brother still have many more It stories to share. She assured fans that It: Welcome to Derry won’t be their final project within the It world.

It’s hard to say what the future holds, but the world Stephen King created is still captivating. The story has gaps, and whether King intended them or not, they offer exciting possibilities. Working on the first season, we definitely found a lot to explore. Revisiting the book as adults, after first reading it as teenagers, gave us a completely different perspective. Our own lives have changed, and that influences how we see the story. So, while I can’t say for sure, I don’t believe this is the last we’ll see of it.

Whether there will be a Chapter Three and future seasons of It: Welcome to Derry is currently uncertain. Although the creators, the Muschietti siblings and Jason Fuchs, have planned a three-season story, HBO hasn’t officially renewed the show yet. Given its success and positive reviews, another season seems probable.

It: Welcome to Derry season 1, is available to stream on HBO Max.
