Eidos Montreal, a well-established game development studio, has announced it’s laying off 124 employees. The studio’s long-time head, David Anfossi, has also left the company.
The video game industry is facing tough times right now. We’re seeing frequent layoffs, rising development costs, and struggles to meet sales goals, all while the technology needed to make games becomes increasingly expensive.
Eidos Montreal has faced a difficult period in recent years. Since being bought by Embracer Group from Square Enix in 2022, the studio hasn’t released a new game.
It’s been really tough watching Eidos Montreal lately. So many cool projects, like a new Deus Ex and even a possible reboot of Soul Reaver, have been cancelled. It’s led to multiple rounds of layoffs at the studio in just a few years, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking as a fan.
I heard last year that the studio was trying to get another Deus Ex game funded, shopping it around to different publishers. But it sounds like nobody bit, which explains why it never really went anywhere. It’s a shame, really.
So, I just saw the news – they’re laying off 124 people. Apparently, projects are shifting around, and it’s hitting both the people who make the game and the ones who help us when things go wrong. It’s a bummer, honestly.
And, because of Anfossi’s departure, the team is now having to restructure its leadership roles.
They’re currently creating a plan to manage the change, and will share more details once the new leader is appointed.
Things aren’t looking promising for this formerly highly-respected gaming company. We extend our best wishes to everyone affected by the recent job cuts.
