As a huge fan of Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs, I always loved the bit where his character, Yogurt, playfully suggests a sequel called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. It was a funny commentary on how studios were already obsessed with making sequels back in the late 80s. But even then, people were always talking about whether a real Spaceballs sequel could happen. And now, after forty years, it looks like something might actually be up – whatever ‘something’ is, it’s happening now!
The reason we know for certain that Spaceballs 2 isn’t just some weird dream is that the principal photography on the film has officially wrapped. Josh Gad posted to Instagram with the news that filming is done. It feels like production had only just started, and Gad himself says that the entire experience has gone by faster than Ridiculous Speed. He said:
I still can’t believe we finished! It felt like we reached ludicrous speed getting #Spaceballs2 wrapped up. Three years ago, I pitched a sequel to Mel Brooks – a project he’d been considering for forty years – and he actually said yes! Even more amazingly, we actually made the movie. This has been the most creatively fulfilling experience of my life, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.
Ever since Josh Gad teased a script with the title hidden, people have been eagerly anticipating the new movie, and that excitement has continued to build as more details have emerged. Many familiar faces from the original cast, like Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and even Mel Brooks, are returning, and we’ll also be introduced to new characters played by Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, who will be portraying the son of Bill Pullman in real life.
Gad expressed his gratitude to the cast and crew of Spaceballs 2, calling the experience wonderful. He specifically highlighted Rick Moranis, who had been retired for a long time, as a particularly pleasant surprise to work with. Gad shared these thoughts in a recent post, writing:
I want to give a huge thank you to the incredible cast of this film, including Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Carrigan Mack, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, Mel Brooks, and, amazingly, Rick Moranis! It was so great to see him back!
Rick Moranis is best known for playing Dark Helmet in the original Spaceballs, a role that became a defining part of his career. Though he’s largely stepped away from acting since the year 2000, his decision to revisit the Spaceballs universe was both unexpected and delighted fans. I really wish I had a rough cut of the movie right now, so I wouldn’t have to wait for all the finishing touches. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, Spaceballs 2 is currently planned to come out in 2027. Until then, I suppose we’ll have to settle for imagining what the after-party would be like – maybe a movie called Spaceballs: The Wrap Party?
