It Took 26 Years, but Marvel Movies Have Finally Remembered How Powerful Cyclops Really Is

The new Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, isn’t just another superhero film – it’s designed as a tribute to over two decades of comic book movies. The film will bring together the X-Men and the Avengers to face Doctor Doom, potentially giving fans the Avengers versus X-Men showdown they’ve always wanted. The cast is growing rapidly and includes familiar faces like Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, and James Marsden, all of whom appear in the recently released teaser trailer.

The X-Men films from Fox heavily featured Wolverine, so much so that people joked the series should have been named after him. Now, it looks like Marvel is shifting focus. The first glimpse of their new X-Men team prominently features Cyclops, unleashing his powerful optic blasts – a striking image that suggests we’ll finally see a Cyclops portrayed as the strong leader fans have always wanted. It’s a clear indication that Marvel is recognizing and showcasing Cyclops’s true power.

Cyclops Has Been Woefully Underpowered in the X-Men Movies

Cyclops’ optic blasts often appear similar to Superman’s heat vision, but they function very differently. Instead of heat, Cyclops emits pure kinetic energy, making his blasts incredibly destructive. The source of his powers is a long-standing debate among fans. Some stories, like X-Men #43, propose his powers work like photosynthesis, while the Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe suggests his eyes open a gateway to a dimension of kinetic energy – a place possibly known as the “Punch Dimension.” Regardless of their true origin, Cyclops’ powers are exceptionally strong.

Cyclops’s power levels in the comics have generally grown as he’s gotten older. Early versions of the character often had to rest after using his optic blasts, implying a limited energy supply. However, more recent stories show a much more powerful Cyclops, capable of incredible feats like splitting a living island in two. During the X-Men: Civil War storyline, Iron Man calculated that Cyclops’ energy output reached 2 gigawatts per second – more power than many nuclear reactors produce.

As a huge X-Men fan, I’ve always been a little frustrated with how they’ve portrayed Cyclops. He’s supposed to be incredibly powerful, but his optic blasts often felt…underwhelming, like just basic lasers. It was actually X-Men Origins: Wolverine that surprisingly showed us a glimpse of just how devastating those blasts could be! But now, it finally looks like Avengers: Doomsday is giving us the Cyclops we’ve been waiting for. The trailer shows him going head-to-head with the Sentinels, and honestly, the sheer power of his optic blasts in that scene is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in an X-Men movie before – it’s amazing!

Will This Finally Be the Cyclops We’ve Been Longing For?

The movie version of Cyclops had several issues, and it wasn’t just about his powers. Ironically, the success of X-Men: The Animated Series in the 90s actually hurt the character. The show portrayed him as a very straight-laced, almost overly moral figure – they even called him a ‘boy scout’ in one episode. As a result, the movie Cyclops came across as distant and lacked the strong leadership qualities he’s known for. James Marsden, the actor who played him, wasn’t really given the opportunity to shine, and the character just didn’t feel like a top-tier X-Men member.

The new Avengers: Doomsday storyline offers a great chance to redefine Scott Summers’ character. It’s an opportunity for Marvel to showcase Cyclops’ true power and leadership skills – he’s proven himself capable, even outsmarting Captain America in past conflicts (though a certain frying pan incident is best forgotten!). It’s especially exciting to see Cyclops featured prominently in trailers, considering how often Wolverine has taken center stage in the movies.

It seems very likely Cyclops won’t survive the upcoming Doomsday film. The latest preview heavily focuses on death, and only a few of the original X-Men actors are confirmed to return, hinting that many characters won’t make it. The preview shows Cyclops fighting Sentinels, and he’s clearly been surrounded, putting him in a dangerous situation. However, even if he doesn’t survive, it looks like he’ll go down fighting in an epic battle.
