With so many popular superhero movies today, it’s easy to forget there was a time when these films weren’t always a guaranteed hit and didn’t perform well at the box office. However, a few movies and series began to shift that perception, notably Sam Raimi’s well-loved Spider-Man trilogy. Interestingly, one of the most famous memes from those films actually came about because of changes requested by the studio, and it surprisingly involved Power Rangers.
The first Spider-Man film, directed by Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, was groundbreaking and demonstrated the potential of superhero movies, which created high expectations for the next installment. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Spider-Man 2 screenwriter Al Gough shared that the studio then required scenes without Spider-Man’s mask because of a specific moment in the first film. This decision ultimately led to a now well-known and often-memed scene, and it all started with Power Rangers (as reported by Popverse).
The Mask Is Off

During the interview, Gough explained that this all began with a particular scene near the end of the first film, featuring Spider-Man and the Green Goblin. Because of that scene, they made the decision to alter things in the second movie.
Gough also mentioned something interesting about the original movie. Back then, before the technology for realistic eye movements existed, Sony wanted to show more of the character’s face without the mask. He explained that Toby Maguire had recorded some additional dialogue – ADR – for the Green Goblin in the first film, and everyone was anxious about how it would be received before the movie premiered.
There’s a scene with them on the roof – it was Green Goblin speaking with Spider-Man. Both were wearing masks, and because of that, their mouths didn’t appear to move – it just looked like two masked figures. It reminded me of Power Rangers. They were genuinely concerned and kept saying, ‘We can’t go through this again.’ That’s why, in the second movie, he’s constantly removing his mask and talking.”
A Meme is Born
There are some strange decisions regarding this rule, evident in both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. Considering how careful he usually is about keeping his identity secret, and who he allows to get close, he removes his mask far too often. Viewers definitely picked up on this pattern in the previous films.
As a huge movie fan, I’ll always be grateful for how they brought to life that incredible scene with Spider-Man trying to stop a train – it’s seriously one of the most impactful moments in the whole film. You see Spider-Man pushing himself to the absolute limit, fighting exhaustion to save everyone on board. Honestly, though, it’s hard *not* to get distracted by Tobey Maguire’s face during that scene! He delivers this absolutely pained expression that’s become a super popular meme and GIF ever since. It really captures the struggle!
It completely breaks the immersion, and surprisingly, it wouldn’t have happened if Sony hadn’t interfered and allowed him to keep his mask on. The situation then became even more absurd, such as when Peter took off the mask before going to a ceremony, which is precisely the *wrong* place to reveal your true identity.
Although Power Rangers was the example used, it really highlights how outdated some views of superhero stories are. They essentially described a superhero movie featuring characters wearing masks – which is common in about 60
