Stephen King, known for his incredibly adaptable stories, is expanding the world of his classic horror novel IT with a new, chilling prequel series called Welcome to Derry.
Andy Muschietti, who directed the successful horror films IT: Chapter One and its follow-up, is directing this new movie. Bill Skarsgård is also returning to reprise his popular role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
Building on brief scenes from Stephen King’s original book, Welcome to Derry introduces a host of new characters who live in the town, and also revisits some faces we already know – including Dick Hallorann from The Shining.
I’m really intrigued by Chris Chalk stepping into the shoes of a character Scatman Crothers made so iconic in Kubrick’s ‘The Shining.’ But honestly, in this version, the character hasn’t quite blossomed into that warm, comforting presence we all remember yet. He’s got potential, but he’s not quite there.

Bill Skarsgård as It aka Pennywise the Clown
Pennywise the Clown is one of the forms taken by the terrifying creature that haunts the town of Derry. This creature is a shapeshifter, meaning it can change its appearance, and often does. Besides Pennywise, it has also appeared as other people and frightening monsters, like the huge spider seen in the movie It: Chapter Two.
I’m a huge fan of Bill Skarsgård! You probably know him from playing Pennywise in the It movies, but he’s been in so much more. He really started to get noticed with Hemlock Grove on Netflix, and since then he’s been fantastic in shows like Castle Rock and movies like Barbarian. He’s also proving he can do other genres – I loved him in the action-packed Atomic Blonde and John Wick: Chapter 4! Plus, he even did voice work as a villain in Marvel’s Eternals, and he’s going to be in the new Nosferatu movie, which I’m really excited about.
He comes from the renowned Skarsgård acting family, which includes his relatives Stellan Skarsgård, known for his role in Andor, and Alexander Skarsgård, famous for Succession.
Taylour Paige as Charlotte Hanlon
Charlotte Hanlon is a woman living in Derry, Maine, known for her strong sense of right and wrong. She’s the grandmother of Mike Hanlon, a key character in Stephen King’s IT and the related movies.
Taylour Paige is well-known for her role in the popular Netflix movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which was also the last film featuring Chadwick Boseman. She’s also appeared in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the quirky comedy The Toxic Avenger, and the VH1 dance series Hit The Floor.
Jovan Adepo as Leroy Hanlon
Leroy Hanlon is Charlotte’s husband and serves as a major in the US Army. He’s also the grandfather of Mike Hanlon, a key character in the novel and movies ‘IT’.
In the 2017 film It: Chapter One, Steven Williams plays an older version of the character who, years later, is raising his son, Mike, and has him working at the family slaughterhouse.
Jovan Adepo is widely recognized for his Emmy-nominated role as Hooded Justice in the popular HBO series, Watchmen. Before that, he collaborated with Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof on the drama The Leftovers, where he played Michael Murphy in seasons 2 and 3.
Jovan Adepo is familiar with Stephen King adaptations, having been in the series The Stand. He recently starred in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem as part of a large cast.
Blake Cameron James as Will Hanlon
I’ve learned about Will Hanlon, and he’s a really interesting character. He’s Charlotte and Leroy’s son, and it sounds like he had a tough time finding his place in Derry when he was young. He was always fascinated by science, and eventually, he became the father of Mike Hanlon, who I also know a lot about.
Blake Cameron James is a rising actor who recently starred in the well-received 2023 independent film, We Grown Now. He also made a guest appearance on an episode of the NBC mystery series Found.
Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann
Dick Hallorann is a US Army soldier who’s famous among Stephen King fans for his role at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. He also appears in It: Welcome to Derry, hinting at a past connection to the town of Derry, Maine.
The portrayal of Dick Hallorann in this series will be quite different from how he’s seen later on. Actor Chris Chalk explained that his version of Dick finds the people of Derry somewhat silly and doesn’t have much respect for them. He described this as a key part of the character’s development, hinting at a less friendly, more complex Dick than viewers might expect.
Chris Chalk is known for his work in popular American TV dramas like Homeland, The Newsroom, Gotham, and Perry Mason. He recently appeared in Feud: Capote vs The Swans, playing James Baldwin. He’s also been in films such as 12 Years a Slave, Detroit, and Godzilla vs Kong.
Rudy Mancuso as Captain Pauly Russo
I’m a big supporter of Captain Pauly Russo! He’s a fellow soldier with Leroy, and they serve together in the US military. They’re a great team, and I’m proud to support them both.
Rudy Mancuso first gained popularity creating content online, building a large following on platforms like YouTube and social media. More recently, he’s transitioned into acting, writing, and directing, most notably with the well-received romantic comedy Música, which he starred in alongside his fiancée, Camila Mendes.
Clara Stack as Lilly
Lilly is a young student in Derry who is dealing with the recent loss of her father and is still grieving.
Clara Stack is known for playing young Kate Bishop in a flashback scene in Marvel’s Hawkeye on Disney Plus. She also appeared as Francesca in the last season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime Video.
Amanda Christine as Ronnie
Who is Ronnie? Another local child who becomes friends with Will and Lilly.
I’ve been following Amanda Christine’s work and it’s amazing to see how much she’s done! She’s been acting for years, and recently I really enjoyed seeing her on A Black Lady Sketch Show. Plus, she actually voiced Ada in the Netflix kids’ show Ada Twist, Scientist – she was fantastic as the main character!
Mikkal Karim-Fidler as Teddy
Who is Teddy? Another child of Derry.
Besides this role, Mikkal Karim-Fidler has appeared in the 2023 film Boy in the Walls and the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He’s a relatively new actor, so he isn’t widely known yet.
