IT: Welcome to Derry Confirms a Major Fan Theory in Season Finale (With a Surprise Character Return)

The TV series Welcome to Derry openly acknowledged its links to Andy Muschietti’s IT movies, despite being set 27 years before the 2017 film. Characters like Leeroy, Charlotte, and Will Hanlon played significant roles, eventually becoming the grandparents and father of Mike Hanlon from the original story. The show also hinted at connections to the Uris family (related to Stanley Uris) and even included Police Chief Clint Bowers, who is the grandfather of Henry Bowers, the bully from the 1980s. As each new episode aired, viewers believed there were even more hidden connections waiting to be discovered.

A popular theory about the characters Marge and Rich has been circulating among fans of IT: Welcome to Derry for several weeks, but it really gained momentum after the events of Episode 7. Hints of a connection between them started appearing in Episode 6, and Rich’s selfless act of saving Marge in that episode led many viewers to believe they were more than just friends. The season finale has now confirmed those suspicions.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry.

IT: Welcome to Derry Confirms THAT Margie Fan Theory

The final episode of IT: Welcome to Derry immediately focuses on Pennywise, who has been unexpectedly awakened and escaped from Derry. With one of the objects keeping him trapped destroyed, he’s found a way out and begins to exert his power, hypnotizing hundreds of children to take with him – seemingly as food. Meanwhile, the original Losers Club from the 1960s, along with other adults, arrive to confront IT, leading to a disturbing encounter where Pennywise shows Marge a glimpse of her future.

The clown, IT, suddenly appears and frightens Marge, shockingly calling her “Margaret Tozier” – a name she hasn’t used on the show, as she’s known as Margaret Truman. To emphasize that IT knows Marge is Richie Tozier’s mother from the original IT movie, it produces a missing child poster featuring Finn Wolfhard. IT then reveals it’s aware Richie and his friends will eventually defeat it, suggesting that killing Marge now would prevent that future. This gets a bit complicated because IT explains it experiences time differently than humans do, and says:

They—him and his friends—are the ones who will either destroy me or bring about my rebirth. Honestly, I lose track of time—tomorrow feels like yesterday. It doesn’t matter, though. Little Pennywise can’t be contained.

After Rich’s death near the end of IT: Welcome to Derry, fans started a heartbreaking theory: Margie will one day have a son named Rich, after her first love. This idea gained traction because Richie Tozier is a central member of the Loser’s Club, and having two characters named Rich confront Pennywise would be a powerful moment. If IT: Welcome to Derry confirms this theory, it would likely deepen fans’ connection to the show and make revisiting the movies even more emotionally impactful.
