The sixth episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ delivers another frightening look at Pennywise and uncovers the history connecting Periwinkle to the evil clown. The episode ends with a chilling suggestion that something even more terrifying is coming for those marked by the Black Spot in Derry.
The story of It: Welcome to Derry begins with an argument between Ronnie and Lilly, who disagree about going back to the sewers. This fighting, along with other anger between the children, appears to be caused by the evil presence of Pennywise affecting the town. Pennywise also possesses Leroy, making him wrongly accuse his son of being responsible for Pauly’s death.
With the recent episode bringing the Stephen King series closer to its conclusion, Mrs. Kersh reveals her past connection to Pennywise and begins plotting something dangerous. At the same time, a large group of Derry residents gathers at the Black Spot, appearing to plan its destruction by fire.
Why The Black Spot Is Attacked In It: Welcome To Derry Episode 6‘s Ending
In the final moments of It: Welcome to Derry episode 6, a group of armed, masked individuals arrive at the Black Spot. They discover that Hank, after escaping Shawshank prison, had been hiding there. Fueled by the town’s prevailing belief that Hank is responsible for the recent child murders, they intend to deliver their own justice.
Because of this, when people feel the justice system has failed them, they often try to punish the offender themselves. However, they don’t realize Pennywise is manipulating them all. The film It: Welcome to Derry shows how this led to the night the Black Spot was destroyed by the Maine Legion of White Decency, a group of supremacists.
Mrs. Kersh’s Periwinkle History & Motives In It: Welcome To Derry Episode 6 Explained
In episode 6, Lilly discovers a collection of clown costumes and pictures of Pennywise in Mrs. Kersh’s attic, leading her to understand that Mrs. Kersh has been disguising herself as Periwinkle and scaring everyone. Confronted, Mrs. Kersh admits her father was a clown named Pennywise, and she lost him when she was young.
When she began working as a nurse at Juniper Hill asylum, patients started telling her they’d seen a man dressed as a clown. This led her to believe her deceased father was somehow trying to reach her. Her obsession with the clown ultimately led to a tragic mistake – the death of a child – before she finally discovered the truth behind the sightings.
Pennywise manipulated Mrs. Kersh by making her believe her father was still alive and trying to reach her. She shockingly reveals to Lilly that she’s been offering children to Pennywise, hoping to see her father again. The episode ends with Mrs. Kersh dressing as Periwinkle once more, suggesting she’s planning to deceive more children and lead them to Pennywise.
Dick Hallorann’s Box & What Pennywise Does To It Explained
In episode 6 of It: Welcome to Derry, Dick Hallorann explains to Leroy that they both have a psychic ability, which he calls “shining.” Hallorann shares that he used to be able to see ghosts, but he intentionally suppressed this ability, essentially locking it away. Pennywise, however, managed to break through his mental defenses and reawaken this power.
Okay, so it all clicks now why we see Hallorann briefly connect with Paul’s ghost right after he dies in that It: Welcome to Derry episode. It really makes you think Pennywise saw Hallorann as a genuine threat, too. I mean, Pennywise probably never encountered someone with that level of psychic power before. That vision of Paul? I think it wasn’t a haunting, but a warning – Pennywise was showing Hallorann what he was capable of doing to him, a twisted way of saying ‘back off!’ It’s a chilling thought, honestly.
If Hallorann can regain control and join forces with Leroy, he may be the only one who can save Derry from Pennywise before it’s too late.
Why Hallorann Wants Nothing To Do With Ronnie’s Father
Most people remember Dick Hallorann from The Shining and Doctor Sleep as a brave character who cares for Danny and his family, even risking his life to keep them safe. But in It: Welcome to Derry, we see a younger Hallorann who is more complex and not always clearly a ‘good guy’.
In the HBO series, Hallorann follows orders from his superiors, assisting them in their investigation of the terrifying force threatening Derry. The series, titled It: Welcome to Derry, will explore his personal journey and show how his experiences with Pennywise and the town itself lead him to become a stronger and more principled hero.
