The seventh episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ delivers a heartbreaking moment before revealing the details of General Shaw’s scheme.
The last scene of It: Welcome to Derry‘s sixth episode showed a large group of Derry residents gathering at the Black Spot, having discovered that Ronnie’s father was hiding there after breaking out of Shawshank Prison. The seventh episode explains that the townspeople aren’t looking for a fight – they simply want to recapture the escaped prisoner and go home. But when Hallorann refuses to cooperate, they resort to setting the Black Spot on fire.
The fire claims many lives, including Rich, who tragically dies trying to rescue Marge. Before the episode ends, Shaw and his team discover a piece of the object that imprisons Pennywise in the woods, and the General finally explains his scheme to Leroy Hanlon.
What Pennywise Does To Will & Mrs. Kersh In It: Welcome To Derry Episode 7
Pennywise reveals its terrifying true form – the Deadlights – to both Mrs. Kerch and Will. Based on Stephen King’s original story, even seeing the Deadlights can shatter a person’s mind. As demonstrated with Mrs. Kerch, exposure instantly paralyzes the victim and leaves them completely vulnerable to Pennywise’s control.
The episode ended with Will also being exposed to Pennywise’s terrifying Deadlights, hinting he might suffer the same fate as Mrs. Kersh. However, both characters are currently still alive. Knowing what happens to Will later in the story, he’ll likely escape Pennywise’s control, either by freeing himself from the Deadlights’ influence or with help from someone else – most likely his mother.
General Shaw’s Real Plan Explained: Why He Wants To Free Pennywise
Once Hanlon discovered General Shaw’s soldiers had recovered one of the pieces holding Pennywise captive, he became suspicious of their motives. When Hanlon questioned Shaw, the General admitted that he was far more worried about Pennywise than any global nuclear conflict.
Shaw’s primary worry has always been the situation within his own country, particularly the increasing crime rates. He deliberately unleashed Pennywise, allowing it to hunt during its recurring cycles, with the intention of frightening the population. Shaw believes that the threat of a powerful, otherworldly entity like Pennywise will control people and make them obey. Essentially, Shaw wants to use Pennywise to scare people into submission and establish a strict, authoritarian government in America.
Whose Spirit Leads Dick Hallorann To The First Shard From The Star
Dick Hallorann appears to be seeing the ghost of one of Rose’s ancestors, probably either Necani or her mother. Earlier episodes showed that Necani’s mother, known as the Sesqui, was killed by Pennywise before Necani discovered the fallen star that brought Pennywise to Earth. Necani and her people then used pieces of this star to keep Pennywise trapped in the woods.
Given that Necani and her mother mainly wanted to protect people from Pennywise, it’s puzzling why the woman assists Hallorann in finding the shard. One possibility is that she’s simply another illusion created by Pennywise within Hallorann’s mind. Alternatively, Necani’s mother might be seeking revenge against those who initially freed Pennywise, such as General Shaw, and who also harmed her when she was alive.
How Rich’s Death Affects The Other Children In It: Welcome To Derry
Everyone is saddened by Rich’s death, but Marge is especially heartbroken. While it’s a tragic loss, the story hinted at it happening for a while. This event will probably motivate the other kids to fight Pennywise with even more determination.
This will empower them to bravely face the looming danger and remain fearless when confronting it. However, Rich’s death also serves as a stark reminder that It: Welcome to Derry isn’t a simple substitute for Stranger Things. It emphasizes that this show is a harsh and uncompromising Stephen King adaptation, where any character could fall victim to the terrifying Pennywise.
Is Derry Actually Safe When Pennywise Is Asleep?
General Shaw and his soldiers believe Derry is safe now that Pennywise has finished feeding and fallen back asleep, assuming it won’t return until its next cycle. Because of this, they carelessly burn one of the barriers meant to contain it. But as the episode shows, Pennywise is actually awakened by the disturbance and immediately attacks Will.
Pennywise’s recent actions indicate it has woken up after sensing a chance to break free. This means even more trouble for Derry, and it’s now up to Hanlon, Hallorann, and the younger heroes in the final installment of It: Welcome to Derry to find a way to contain it before it’s too late.
