Andy Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, the team behind the ‘It’ movies, have revealed how Sophia Lillis’ brief appearance adds a deeper layer of meaning to both films.
Lillis briefly appeared as Beverly Marsh in the final scene of the first season’s last episode, ‘Winter Fire,’ which became available on HBO Max last week.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Andy Muschietti explained that he wanted the final scene to feel more connected to the original films. He added that the decision to include Beverly in the epilogue came about quite late in the process.
This story takes place before the events of the movies IT: Chapter One and IT: Chapter Two. It focuses on Beverly and her father as they cope with the suicide of Beverly’s mother, which happened at Juniper Hill asylum.
Ingrid, an older woman living in a care facility, enters and tells Beverly, “People say that once you die in Derry, a part of you always remains.”
This is the same line Ingrid from Gregson delivers to the grown-up Beverly, played by Jessica Chastain, in the 2019 follow-up movie.

Regarding the connection between ‘It: Welcome to Derry‘ and the 2019 follow-up movie, Fuchs pointed out that the scene feels different when viewed after seeing the sequel.
He explained that Beverly may not consciously recall the event, but it’s buried deep within her memory. This explains why ‘It’ chose that particular form – it’s connected to a very old, traumatic memory for her, specifically an early experience with Mrs. Kersh.
It: Welcome to Derry is available on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
