The connection between Marge and Richie Tozier in ‘It: Welcome to Derry‘ might have surprised viewers, but looking back at earlier episodes shows that the reveal was actually hinted at throughout the season. ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ season 1 was full of unexpected turns, consistently challenging what audiences thought would happen. Right from the start, this spin-off series defied expectations.
As a huge TV fan, I was absolutely floored by the pilot of this show – they killed off almost the entire main cast! It was a total shock to the system. It reminded me of It: Welcome to Derry, where they had a similar massacre near the end of the first season, and what was even more unsettling was that not everyone who died was even killed by Pennywise. It really threw me for a loop!
Both of these episodes shocked viewers with unexpected and violent character deaths, emphasizing the show’s dangerous and unpredictable world. But the season one finale, “Winter Fire,” also included a surprising revelation: Marge received a vision of her future from Pennywise the Dancing Clown, who told her she would eventually have a son.
Marge’s Class Clown Act Makes It Obvious She’s Richie’s Mother
As a huge fan of the It movies, I was completely floored by a recent reveal! In a seriously mind-bending moment, Pennywise produced a missing person poster… featuring Richie Tozier! It was so unexpected. For those who don’t know, Richie was definitely a fan favorite, played brilliantly by Finn Wolfhard in the first two films, and then, wonderfully, by Bill Hader as the adult version in It: Chapter Two. It felt like the whole franchise timeline just looped back on itself, which was a really clever and unsettling touch.
Rich’s death was heartbreaking, but it became even more tragic when it was revealed that Marge had named her son after the boy who died saving her life. Looking back, this connection isn’t the only hint – Marge’s particular sense of humor, and how carefully she uses it, also points to this hidden link.
Marge and Richie have a similar, often inappropriate and sometimes harsh, sense of humor, and both use it to cope with the tough social scene of high school. At the beginning of season one of It: Welcome to Derry, Marge isn’t portrayed as a typical hero; she mostly hangs out with the school’s bullies, known as the Patty Cakes.
Marge initially tries to impress the Patty Cakes by making fun of Lily and the others, but after a terrifying experience with Pennywise, she changes her allegiance. She then uses her playful, sometimes crude, humor to turn the tables on the Patty Cakes and protect her new friends, whom she now considers her equals.
It: Welcome to Derry’s Richie Tozier Story Makes Marge’s Character Arc Sadder
By the time the show reaches Neibolt House, Marge has become a key member of the group and is starting to return Richie’s obvious feelings for her. Earlier in the series, Marge bullied Lily with pranks but later made amends, similar to how Richie uses humor to shield himself and sometimes unintentionally hurts those around him.
In the It films, Richie’s biggest fear is being a coward, which is shown when he leaves his friends during their first encounter with Pennywise. While he eventually finds the courage to fight alongside them, It: Chapter 2 explores this insecurity further, revealing that the older Richie, played by Bill Hader, is also afraid of confronting his own sexuality.
The original novel hints that Richie is gay, and the film It: Chapter 2 confirms this by showing a romantic relationship between Richie and Eddie. Similar to how Ingrid Kersh in It: Welcome to Derry foreshadows the unsettling older woman in It: Chapter 2, Marge’s journey to find courage reflects the challenges her son will later face.
It was heartbreaking that Richie carried a lifelong unrequited love for Eddie, unable to share his true feelings. But the show It: Welcome to Derry adds another layer of sadness, revealing that Richie’s fear of being rejected and his own internal struggles with his identity weren’t the only reasons he stayed silent.
It: Welcome to Derry’s Richie Link Makes The Show’s Saddest Death Better
The connection between Richie and Eddie is similar to the unexpressed feelings between Richie and Marge in It: Welcome to Derry. Both relationships suffered because the characters couldn’t share their emotions until it was too late. A key element of what made It: Welcome to Derry so scary was how the parents’ experiences impacted their children’s lives.

As a viewer, I was really invested in Will Hanlon’s family and whether they’d stick around Derry – it cleverly explains why Mike feels so responsible for protecting the town later on. And while it’s tragic, Rich’s ghost assisting the kids with trapping Pennywise felt earned. But honestly, the most touching moment? Marge naming her son Richie after him, knowing that this Richie would ultimately be instrumental in finally defeating Pennywise. It was a beautiful, full-circle moment that really resonated with me.
The discovery that Marge is Richie’s mother gives meaning to the most heartbreaking death in It: Welcome to Derry. Her son ultimately joined the group that defeated Pennywise. While the time travel element in It: Welcome to Derry could have been confusing, it actually enhanced the overall story and made it even more impactful.
