The new series, IT: Welcome to Derry, began with an unusual setup. Because the two IT movies released in 2017 and 2019 were connected, and the story’s monster sleeps for 27 years between appearances, the series had limited options for when it could take place. Setting the show in 1989 or 2016, alongside the films, would have been confusing and could have created inconsistencies in the plot. Therefore, the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry is set much further back, in 1962.
A major element of the planned series, IT: Welcome to Derry, is that each season will explore a different time period, moving further into the past. The creators have already mapped out plans for Season 2 to be set in 1935 and Season 3 in 1908. Interestingly, the first season has already given glimpses of these earlier eras. This suggests there are plenty of stories still to be told – far more than viewers might expect.
IT: Welcome to Derry Still Has Mysteries to Solve in New Seasons
The newest installment of IT: Welcome to Derry finally shows what fans have speculated about for years: Bob Gray, who transforms into Pennywise the Dancing Clown, was actually a person who was killed and then taken over by IT. The entity now uses Bob’s form to prey on children. The episode shows Bob performing as Pennywise – a surprisingly sad character – and how much the children enjoy his shows. We also see a young boy watching from afar, with a curious and knowing look.
Later in the episode, Bob is shown drinking and smoking when a young boy emerges from the woods and says, “The children are drawn to you.” This moment reveals why IT targeted both Bob and Pennywise, and hints at how IT’s strategy is changing as the population of Derry grows, offering it more potential victims. While we don’t see Bob’s death in this scene, we know it’s coming—confirmed by the discovery of his bloodied handkerchief and IT’s subsequent transformation into Pennywise for the decades to follow.
According to IT: Welcome to Derry showrunner Jason Fuchs, the fate of Bob Gray after entering the woods remains unclear. While Ingrid Kersh claims she never saw her father again, and a bloody kerchief was discovered, many questions linger. Fuchs also points out a new mystery surrounding the child form IT initially takes. He explains that this form appears before IT decides to use it to lure Bob Gray, raising the question of its origin. Fuchs believes these unanswered questions, sparked by solutions to existing mysteries in the season, will intrigue a new generation of IT fans just as the original mysteries did for him.
The show will likely reveal even more about IT’s activities in 1908, details that the source material doesn’t cover. This includes how IT developed the Pennywise persona and what its first hunt as Pennywise was like. We’ll probably also learn how much time remained in IT’s feeding cycle after it consumed Bob Gray. The series has already hinted at a significant event from that year – the Kitchener Ironworks explosion, which is shown in the opening credits (even featuring a flaming Easter bunny due to the timing). This explosion would almost certainly be a central plot point in a potential third season of IT: Welcome to Derry.
Let’s not jump to conclusions about future seasons just yet. The show has already hinted at what Season 2 could be about, showing The Bradley Gang’s car and bodies in an early episode – and even depicting their deaths in the opening credits. This sets up a lot of possibilities for a new season to explore. While HBO hasn’t officially confirmed another season, the incredible popularity of IT: Welcome to Derry suggests it’s likely to happen. The show’s viewership has been a huge success, much like a popular, highly-anticipated event.
