IT: Welcome To Derry Officially Makes HBO Max Viewership History After Just 3 Episodes

Just three episodes in, IT: Welcome to Derry is already a big success on HBO Max, having one of the strongest starts of any show on the platform. As a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s IT (2017) and IT Chapter Two (2019), the series has consistently ranked among the most-watched shows on HBO Max since it debuted on October 26th.

The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry has been a major hit for HBO Max. Deadline reports that its average viewership numbers—both in the U.S. and worldwide—rank among the top three best debuts for any new series on the platform. Episode 3 averaged 5 million viewers across all platforms in the U.S. within its first three days, and the premiere drew an impressive 5.7 million. Across the entire season, Welcome to Derry averaged 9.2 million U.S. viewers and almost 15 million viewers worldwide per episode.

The first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry was a huge success, becoming one of HBO Max’s top three premieres ever, following only House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. While the season is performing well, HBO Max hasn’t shared which other two shows join Welcome to Derry as having the platform’s best first seasons.

Despite solid viewership for episode 3 of IT: Welcome to Derry, the series needs to keep attracting audiences in the remaining episodes. Season 1 has eight episodes total, meaning five are still to come, with the finale scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 14th.

The first season of ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ has been competing for viewers with popular shows already airing on HBO on Sunday nights. New comedies like Tim Robinson’s ‘The Chair Company’ and Rachel Sennott’s ‘I Love LA’ also premiered on Sundays and are performing well for HBO Max, adding to the competition.

With an average of 3 million U.S. viewers per episode, The Chair Company is HBO Max’s most popular new comedy series ever. I Love LA is also performing well, seeing a 12% increase in viewers for its second episode and averaging 1.4 million U.S. viewers per episode. Both shows will continue to compete for viewers through November and mid-December, as The Chair Company concludes two weeks before and I Love LA ends one week after the season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry.

As a huge fan, I was thrilled to see the premiere of IT: Welcome to Derry pull in numbers comparable to hits like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us! That kind of start is a really promising sign for the show’s future. The people making the series have talked about wanting to tell the full story over three seasons, and while HBO hasn’t officially confirmed anything beyond season one just yet, the consistently strong viewership so far makes me feel confident we’ll get to see their complete vision – a deeper dive into Pennywise and the dark history of Derry. It really looks like Welcome to Derry is going to stick around!

There are still many mysteries and frightening moments to uncover in the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry. Episode 4 will debut on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, November 16th at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. With consistently positive reviews from both critics and viewers—currently boasting a 78% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the show is expected to gain even more popularity as the season continues.
