IT: Welcome to Derry‘s horrific demon baby has been explained by showrunner Andy Muschietti.
According to EW, the creepy baby demon was director Muschietti’s idea, created to tap into the anxieties of 1962. With the shadow of World War II still present, the threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis looming, and the Cold War escalating, the filmmakers wanted to evoke fears surrounding both nuclear attack and birth defects.
As a big fan, I found it really interesting to hear how the director talked about the widespread fear during that time period. He explained that the terrifying baby demon in Welcome To Derry actually represents those anxieties, and it’s crazy to think those fears were already around as far back as the late 1950s! Here’s what he had to say:
Understanding the anxieties of the time is crucial. People were genuinely terrified of nuclear attacks, radiation poisoning, and the possibility of birth defects. It’s hard to imagine what it would have been like to grow up then, with a child’s imagination easily turning to frightening scenarios. This fear was also reflected in many horror movies from the late 1950s, which often focused on the dangers of radiation.
