IT: Welcome to Derry Sneakily Told Us Something New About Pennywise

The creators of IT: Welcome to Derry said the series would finally explain where Pennywise came from, diving into its long history and strong ties to the town. The first two episodes started to do this, showing that the U.S. military is studying the creature, hoping to use its power as a mind-based weapon during the Cold War. This military focus offered a fresh way to look at Pennywise, but many questions about what it actually is remained. Although viewers haven’t gotten the full story they were expecting, the third episode of Welcome to Derry makes a big leap forward, quietly revealing a completely new aspect of the creature’s connection to the town.

Warning: Spoilers below for IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 3

The third episode of IT: Welcome to Derry jumps back in time to 1908, fitting into Pennywise’s repeating 27-year cycle of activity. This long flashback focuses on a young boy named Francis, years before he becomes the tough General (James Remar) in charge of Operation Precept. We see him form a strong friendship with a Native American girl named Rose during a peaceful summer. Rose (Kimberly Guerrero) also appears in the show’s main storyline set in the 1960s, where she owns a thrift store that helped the Hanlon family when they first moved to Derry. This connection immediately links these two important new characters to the town’s troubling past.

Rose and Francis spent much of their childhood playing near the woods surrounding Derry. One afternoon, while playing tag, Francis ran into the forest despite Rose’s warnings. There, he encountered Pennywise, who appeared as a frightening carnival performer Francis had seen before. Rose courageously followed him into the woods and helped him escape. Once they were out of the trees, they were safe. Rose then promised to explain what the creature was and why it couldn’t leave the woods, but the scene ends before she reveals the secret. Even without knowing the full story, the scene reveals something important.

IT: Welcome to Derry Reveals Pennywise Is Trapped Somehow

The 1908 scene hints that Pennywise is trapped within the boundaries of Derry, unable to leave. This offers a fresh explanation for a long-standing mystery: why hasn’t Pennywise ever ventured beyond the town? As an ancient being that needs to feed on fear roughly every 27 years, it relies on the children of Derry for sustenance. Staying in such a small town is actually a weakness for the creature. A larger city would offer a constant stream of victims and make it much harder to find. While Pennywise’s connection to Derry has always been considered the reason it stays, this new evidence suggests a more definitive limit to its abilities.

The title ‘Welcome to Derry’ suggests the town isn’t just where the creature chooses to live, but a place it’s actually trapped in—unable to escape for reasons we don’t yet know. Rose seems to hold the answers to why Pennywise is stuck, making her incredibly important. This puts her at odds with General Shwan, who’s determined to find Pennywise no matter the risk. Hopefully, the series will soon reveal what Rose knows, explaining the forces keeping Pennywise bound to Derry and giving us a clearer picture of its weaknesses.

New episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry premiere on HBO every Sunday.
