The first season of Welcome to Derry has finished airing, despite a challenging production process. The show faced difficulties from the Hollywood strikes and initial uncertainty about whether Bill Skarsgård would reprise his role as Pennywise. Fortunately, Skarsgård returned, and the series has been a success, earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and attracting a large audience.
Although there’s been a lot of excitement about the series, some criticisms have remained. IT: Welcome to Derry faced the challenge of not disrupting the storylines established in the first two IT movies, and it’s also been criticized for relying heavily on computer-generated effects. Now, actress Taylour Paige, one of the show’s stars, has shared her own concerns, specifically about how the first season ended. Be warned: spoilers ahead for the season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry.
IT: Welcome to Derry’s Taylour Paige Roasts Season Finale Script

As the miniseries IT: Welcome to Derry comes to a close, most of the characters are making plans to leave town now that IT has fallen into a 27-year slumber. The Hanlon family – Leeroy (Jovan Adepo), his wife Charlotte (Taylour Paige), and their son Will (Blake Cameron James) – are among those preparing to start a new life elsewhere. However, at the very last moment, Charlotte decides to stay. She chooses to remain in Derry and work alongside Rose and the local Native American tribe to prepare the town for IT’s inevitable return. In an interview with Deadline, Taylour Paige expressed her strong feelings about the finale and the direction her character took in those final scenes.
To be honest, I’m not satisfied with how this was written. It just doesn’t feel right. The story suggests people forget things while in Derry, but I don’t find that believable. I understand the context – in 1962, women were often expected to stay quiet, focus on their families, and be the center of the home. However, I wished for more for Charlotte and her family. I think it would have been too extreme for her to leave, and realistically, it was uncommon for women in that era to simply walk away from their marriages. Many women sacrificed their own happiness to hold their families together, and that was just the norm.
Paige is right to point this out. The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry established Charlotte as a consistently moral person who prioritizes her family. Therefore, her sudden decision to stay and fight in Derry feels forced and out of character. It seems the writers are limiting her options based on past events. As fans of IT know, Leeroy is still alive during the first movie, along with his grandson, Mike. The way Charlotte is written in the series feels less about genuine character development and more about manipulating the story to fit the larger IT narrative.
As a film fan, something about this just doesn’t ring true. Considering what we learned about Mike’s family in the first IT movie, it feels like the Hanlons really dropped the ball when it came to preparing him for Pennywise’s return. If they were truly dedicated to monitoring IT and keeping its history alive, you’d think they’d have done a better job protecting their grandson, who was clearly the most at risk. You could blame Pennywise for influencing things, but honestly, it just feels like a plot hole – a bit of sloppy writing, if you ask me.
