IT: Welcome To Derry’s Most Tragic Death So Far Hit Me Even Harder When Combined With Marge’s Big Fan Theory

Be careful! The following contains spoilers for the newest episode of IT: Welcome to Derry. If you haven’t seen it on HBO or HBO Max yet, you might want to avoid reading further.

The latest installment of IT: Welcome to Derry was a real emotional rollercoaster, filled with hidden references and introducing the true nature of Bob Gray. While it had those lighter moments, it truly broke my heart. The episode focused on the infamous Black Spot massacre – a tragic event in Stephen King’s stories where many soldiers and civilians died. Though the deaths of the Black characters at the hands of Clint Bowers were devastating, the most heartbreaking moment was the death of young Rich Santos.

Rich was one of the smoothest, most charming kids ever seen on television. He was a bit of a liar, but lovable, and had a big crush on Marge, played by Matilda Lawler. Sadly, when the Black Spot began to blaze, neither of them could escape. Rich had the idea for Marge to hide inside an overturned refrigerator to avoid the smoke and flames – a brave plan, but ultimately, it didn’t save him, and he perished in the fire (or more likely, from smoke inhalation).

It was already going to be a heartbreaking scene, knowing he was willing to give his life to save her. But the intimate conversation they had – where they could clearly hear each other over all the surrounding chaos – made it even more poignant. It wasn’t entirely realistic, but when someone speaks with as much love as Rich did to Marge, you can overlook a little bit of implausibility!

How That Fan Theory About Marge Makes Rich’s Death Even More Heartbreaking

Many fans of the miniseries IT: Welcome to Derry have a fascinating theory: they believe the character Marge grows up to be known as Maggie, and eventually becomes Richie Tozier’s mother. This idea isn’t just based on their similar names; it also connects to the fact that Marge wears thick, coke-bottle glasses, which look a lot like the ones Richie has.

It’s curious where Marge got the name Richie. It likely came from the small cat who used to sit on top of the refrigerator, preventing her from leaving. He essentially trapped both of them! Naming her son after him feels like a tribute to that little ‘martyr.’ If so, it adds a surprising connection to Richie’s story, linking it to his mother’s past romance.

The HBO show connected to the two IT movies by revealing Madeleine Stowe’s character as Mrs. Kersh, a figure who was entirely created by the entity in the second IT film.

Honestly, all this speculation about Marge could be totally off base – just a weird series of coincidences. Until the show actually confirms something, though, it looks like we’re all just left to wonder and come up with our own theories, which, as a film and TV fan, is always fun!

IT: Welcome to Derry is set to wrap its Season 1 run on Sunday, December 14, at 9:00 p.m.
