It’s Been a Decade Since These Anime Released a Sequel & They May Never Will

Anime has become incredibly popular worldwide, with more than 100 new shows premiering every year. While many become hits and studios want to attract even more viewers, this often delays sequels to older, beloved series. It’s incredibly frustrating when a captivating anime ends on a cliffhanger, and then a second season isn’t released for years, or even over a decade. These shows often have original stories and compelling characters, earning them a dedicated fanbase, but that isn’t always enough to convince a studio to invest in another season.

It’s rare for an anime to get a sequel after ten years or more – we’ve only seen it happen a few times with shows like Bleach and Kimi ni Todoke. A reboot is usually a more likely possibility, though even that can be challenging. This list features some fantastic anime from various genres, but unfortunately, a continuation of these series is no longer possible, so fans will have to turn to the manga instead.

10) Ouran High School Host Club

When people talk about great classic Shojo anime, Ouran High School Host Club consistently comes up as one of the most memorable romantic comedies. Based on the popular manga by Bisco Hatori, the anime adaptation by Bones first aired in 2006 with 26 episodes. Even though it’s been almost twenty years since it first came out, the series remains incredibly popular.

Haruhi Fujioka, a brilliant student at the elite Ouran Academy, is searching for a peaceful study spot when she accidentally discovers the Host Club – a group of handsome boys who are popular among the girls. When she startles the club’s founder, Tamaki Suou, and breaks a valuable vase, Haruhi finds herself in debt. To work off the cost, the club members decide she must disguise herself as a boy and help them with their hosting duties.

9) Maid-Sama

Maid-Sama is a popular Shojo manga and anime that first aired over 15 years ago, but hasn’t received any new episodes since. While the manga series has finished, a continuation of the anime seems unlikely. The anime ends with a significant turning point in the relationship between the two main characters, leaving their future uncertain. The story follows Misaki Ayuzawa, a determined student council president at Seika High, a school that recently transitioned from all-boys to co-ed.

The school has more male students than female, and they’re often difficult to control, even for the teachers. Misaki works hard to maintain order, which is why she keeps her part-time job at a Maid Cafe a secret – her family is deeply in debt. But her complicated life gets even more challenging when Takumi Usui, the most popular boy at school, finds out about it.

8) Kamisama Kiss

When discussing beloved Shojo anime, Kamisama Kiss is a must-mention. It first aired in 2012, with a second season following in 2015. However, the manga finished in 2016, and unfortunately, a third anime season doesn’t seem likely. The story centers around Nanami Momozono, a high school student facing a tough time – she’s lost her home, is in debt, and feels completely lost.

I was completely hooked when I learned about Nanami’s story! She’s just figuring things out when she ends up helping this guy who’s being bothered by a dog. The thanks she gets is… unexpected! He offers her a home, but it’s actually a really old, falling-apart shrine! That’s where she meets these amazing shrine spirits and a cool fox spirit named Tomoe. Turns out, the guy she saved, Mikage, is actually a land god who’s been neglecting his duties! And now, unbelievably, he’s essentially passed them on to Nanami! To even have a place to live, she has to step up and become the new shrine caretaker, and somehow convince Tomoe to work with her as her familiar. It’s such a wild setup!

7) Claymore

Released in 2007 by Madhouse, Claymore remains a highly regarded dark fantasy anime. Many fans don’t realize, however, that the anime significantly altered the story from its original manga source and only adapted about a third of it. Despite the manga being finished and well-received, it hasn’t gained enough traction to justify a continuation.

I watched as the story unfolded, centered around Clare, a unique individual created with both human and youma blood – youma being these terrifying, shapeshifting demons that crave human flesh. It all started with Raki, a normal boy whose life was turned upside down when youma brutally killed his family. The villagers, fearing him, exiled him afterward. Lost and alone, he ended up following Clare, who was traveling on a dark path, determined to avenge someone she deeply loved.

6) Barakamon

The anime had a prequel, but the original series, which came out in 2014, never got a continuation. The manga finished up around two years ago, leaving a lot of the story untold. Many fans consider Barakamon to be one of the greatest slice-of-life anime ever made, even though it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

This touching story follows Sei Handa, a famous calligrapher, as he tries to rebuild his life and find himself after accidentally injuring an older man at a calligraphy show. His father sends him to a peaceful island to get away from it all, and although he struggles at first with the slower pace of country life, he soon finds acceptance thanks to the welcoming locals and a mischievous young girl named Naru Kotoishi.

5) Hyouka

Hyouka began as a novel written by Honobu Yonezawa in 2001, and it was later turned into both a manga and an anime series in 2012. Although the novel and manga are still being released, there’s been no news about a continuation of the anime. The series has gained a loyal following because of its interesting mix of everyday life and intriguing character-based mysteries. The story centers around Hōtarō Oreki, a very smart but lazy high school student who prefers to avoid effort whenever possible.

I’ve noticed this guy really avoids effort whenever he can. But his quiet life changed completely when his sister made him join the Classic Literature Club. It wasn’t long before he was tangled up in all sorts of mysteries. At first, he didn’t care about uncovering the club’s past, but he eventually gave in. There’s this girl in the club, Eru Chitanda, who’s endlessly curious, and her persistence really wore him down – he just couldn’t resist getting involved.

4) Noragami

The Noragami manga finished its 14-year run in 2024, but fans are still waiting for a third season of the anime, which hasn’t been announced since 2015. Considering the long wait and how much the anime deviated from the original manga, a complete reboot would likely be a better approach than simply continuing the story. Noragami is a fantasy series about Yato, a struggling god who takes on small jobs for just five yen, hoping to gain enough money to build his own shrine, though he constantly faces new challenges.

Things aren’t going well for Yato when he meets Hiyori, a girl who saves him from danger but ends up getting hit by a car. Surprisingly, she discovers her spirit has separated from her body, and Yato offers to help – for a small fee of five yen.

3) Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun

I first watched Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun back in 2014, when the 12-episode anime season came out, and honestly, it’s still one of the funniest rom-coms I’ve ever seen. The manga it’s based on by Izumi Tsubaki is still being made, which means there’s plenty more story to tell, but I’m starting to think we might never get a second season. The story centers around Chiyo Sakura, a high school student who tries to tell her crush, Umetaro Nozaki, how she feels, but ends up accidentally making him think she’s a fan of his work.

Nozaki unexpectedly gave the girl his autograph, leaving her completely confused. It slowly dawned on her that the boy she liked was actually a popular manga artist who went by the name Sakiko Yumeno. Despite the constant mix-ups, she ended up becoming his assistant, never quite finding the right moment to tell him how she felt. Throughout the story, Chiyo also meets Nozaki’s eccentric friends, and even everyday situations become hilariously chaotic.

2) Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Inspired by the acclaimed manga by Shinobu Ohtaka, this fantastic series is still waiting for its third season to continue the main storyline. While a prequel was released, much of the original story remains untold. The show follows Aladdin, a powerful young magician, as he travels the world searching for his identity. In this world, the title of ‘Magi’ is reserved for exceptionally gifted magicians with the power to change the world.

Powerful Magi wield considerable influence globally, allowing each of them to select at least one promising individual to become a king. They then mentor these candidates, even aiding them in navigating treacherous labyrinths known as Dungeons, which hold the power of ancient djinns. Aladdin, accompanied by Ugo, a djinn he summons with a flute, begins his adventure and quickly befriends Alibaba Saluja. Together, they conquer a Dungeon and form a strong bond. As their journey unfolds, more is revealed about Aladdin’s origins and his important destiny.

1) Yona of the Dawn

With its fantasy world, blossoming romance, heartwarming found family, and characters who grow and overcome tragic pasts, Yona of the Dawn has a lot to offer. It’s a series you won’t regret watching! The biggest disappointment for fans, though, is that Studio Pierrot never made a second season, despite the manga nearing its end and the anime’s continued popularity. Many viewers are still hoping for a sequel.

The story follows Princess Yona of the Kouka Kingdom, who is forced to flee the castle after her father is murdered. Devastated by the loss of her father and with nowhere to turn, Yona struggles to cope, but her loyal bodyguard and childhood friend, Hak, is always there for her. With Hak’s support, Yona begins a journey to discover her true purpose: finding the four powerful Legendary Dragon Warriors and traveling throughout the kingdom.
