As a lifelong movie fan, I was thrilled to hear that a Dirty Dancing sequel is actually happening! It’s been talked about for years, ever since they first announced it in 2020. Jennifer Grey is coming back as Baby, which is fantastic, and the people involved seem to really understand how to make a sequel that honors the original while still feeling fresh. But honestly? As excited as I am, it’s impossible not to feel a little sad knowing Patrick Swayze won’t be there. That’s a loss no sequel can really fix.
Deadline reports that Lionsgate is moving forward with a new Dirty Dancing film, bringing back producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who worked on The Hunger Games movies. Kim Rosenstock will write the script, and Jennifer Grey will also be an executive producer. While I’m thrilled at the prospect of returning to Kellerman’s, it’s hard not to feel the loss of Patrick Swayze, who passed away in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His impact is central to the film’s spirit. If the sequel can both celebrate his memory and give Grey a fulfilling role beyond just revisiting past successes, it has the potential to be truly special.
Jennifer Grey has often spoken about how deeply personal the role of Baby still is for her, and that’s why it took her so long to consider revisiting it. She explained that the sequel wasn’t just a way to capitalize on the original’s success, but a project she’d been thinking about for years, waiting for the right team and approach.
Playing Baby has always been incredibly special to me, and clearly to many fans. I’ve often thought about what happened to her character after the first movie and imagined what her life would be like. It’s taken a while to find the right team to continue that story respectfully, but I’m thrilled to announce we’re finally getting close to sharing the next chapter!
I completely agree with Jacobson – Dirty Dancing is one of those rare movies that still gets to you, even after all these years. It really holds up, and he pointed out that…
Dirty Dancing remains a powerfully moving, exciting, and unconventional film, even now. Brad and I are thrilled to be collaborating with Jennifer Grey and Lionsgate on a continuation of the story.
Despite all the effort and excitement surrounding the new Dirty Dancing film, there’s a major challenge: how do you continue the story without Patrick Swayze? The original movie was so iconic because of the chemistry between Baby and Johnny, and that connection can’t be recreated. We’ll soon see how the filmmakers handle this, but I suspect Swayze’s absence will be felt throughout the entire film, no matter how good it is.
As a total movie fan, I still think Dirty Dancing is one of the best films of the ’80s – and a truly unforgettable love story! I could watch it over and over. While a sequel is in the works, I’m really happy to hear Jennifer Grey is involved and that the people making it seem to genuinely respect the original. Until then, though, I’ll happily keep rewatching the classic – it’s available to rent if you have Amazon Prime!
