Even though 2XKO was released on consoles just a few weeks ago, on January 20th, it doesn’t seem to be gaining much traction with players.
I was so excited when the League of Legends fighting game came to PC, and everyone seemed to really love it! Now it’s finally on PS5 and Xbox Series, which is awesome, and it’s great to see it doing well on consoles too.
Riot Games’ 2XKO team announced they are reducing support for the game, and some team members will be leaving the company as a result.
Producer Tom Cannon announced that the 2XKO team will be getting smaller after careful consideration and discussion.
So, as we brought 2XKO to consoles, we started noticing some patterns in how people were playing. It’s awesome that we’ve built a really dedicated fanbase, but honestly, the game just hasn’t taken off enough to justify keeping a team this big going long-term. It’s a tough decision, but we have to be realistic about where things are at.
We’re streamlining our team to concentrate on making important improvements to the game, addressing feedback we’ve already received from players. We’ll be sharing details about these plans shortly.
It’s famously tough for new fighting games to gain popularity, and even harder to keep and grow an audience. While 2XKO had the benefit of an existing brand, it hasn’t attracted players as much as Riot Games had hoped.
Okay, so it’s not all bad news. Cannon basically said this isn’t about blaming anyone at Riot, and it doesn’t mean 2XKO is finished. They’re just changing things up with the team to make sure 2XKO has a better chance of sticking around for the long haul.
It will be interesting to watch how well 2XKO does in the coming weeks and months. Most people agree it’s a fun and easy-to-learn fighting game with a lot of promise, but it might not attract more casual players because it heavily emphasizes online gameplay.
