Batman and his allies are known as some of the most formidable heroes, even though they don’t have superpowers. While heroes like the Flash and Wonder Woman could cause massive damage if they went rogue, the Bat-Family’s humanity actually makes them more frightening. They’ve pushed their physical and mental training to incredible levels, becoming experts in fighting, investigation, and countless other skills. They’ve become legendary figures, proving time and time again that they don’t need superpowers to be heroes. In fact, when they do temporarily gain powers, they become nearly unbeatable, which is what makes this recent situation so shocking.
Cassandra Cain, known as Batgirl, is widely considered the world’s most skilled martial artist and the best fighter in the entire Bat-Family. She essentially ‘reads’ opponents through their movements, anticipating their attacks before they happen. Already a formidable one-on-one combatant capable of defeating much larger opponents, she’s become even more dangerous with the recent development of superpowers, as revealed in Batgirl (2024) #17.
The Power of Blood

Cass was eager to have a normal dinner with the people she considers family after a difficult and emotionally draining experience involving her mother’s side. However, while traveling to meet them in Gotham, she was suddenly overwhelmed by a dangerous force within her own body. This force violently attacked her from the inside, threatening to break free and cause destruction. With immense effort, Cass managed to control it, but she didn’t want her loved ones to see her in such a state. She enlisted the help of Jade Tiger and Jaya to find those responsible, as the source of these powers stemmed from her family’s connection to the criminal organization known as the Blood, who had recently established a base of operations in Gotham.
Despite Batgirl’s difficulty managing her aggressive instincts, the team quickly defeated the guards while searching for the Bloodmaster. However, just as they found him, his aide shot him. The chaos that followed forced Batgirl to realize she needed to accept and guide her inner rage, rather than suppress it. With her powers now under control, she fought through the remaining guards and discovered a hidden portal to the Spirit World—a story for another time. The revelation that Cassandra has powers is a particularly intriguing development.
The Greatest Batgirl Is Better Than Ever

Batgirl’s recently gained abilities are incredibly versatile. She can now project and manipulate her own blood with great accuracy. In this issue, she primarily used it as fast-moving, whip-like extensions to attack enemies, but she’s still learning to control it. Previous characters with similar powers could form their blood into various weapons, and Batgirl will likely be able to do the same, potentially creating blood-based batarangs and blades soon. The source of her powers – dark spirits – also adds an interesting dimension.
As we saw in issue #9, the source of this power lies within a person’s blood. Wu Bing tried to use these spirits to defeat Batgirl, but they became fascinated with Cass instead and left her unharmed. These spirits probably unlocked hidden abilities within her and seem to be linked to the Spirit World, which Cass will be revisiting in the next issue. Now, the most powerful version of Batgirl has a magical ability tied to her blood, allowing her to manifest almost anything she imagines. Her only limitations are the amount of blood she has and her naturally violent instincts.
Batgirl just received a powerful new weapon, and it’s making her even more formidable. She was already the Bat-Family’s best fighter, but now she has shapeshifting tendrils that greatly expand her attack options. For someone with exceptional control over her body, this is like multiplying her fighting ability tenfold. Even without superpowers, Batgirl was a top-tier fighter. Now, with these new skills, she’s prepared to face much stronger opponents, and anyone who crosses her path should be worried.
