The anticipation for the comeback of the cherished manga, “Nana”, has been sparked anew, as acclaimed mangaka Ai Yazawa announced her plans to resume work and provide updates on the story’s progress. Although a concrete date or timeframe for the series’ magazine revival hasn’t been set, fans can take comfort in knowing that the creator herself eagerly awaits its return. Just as the two separate characters named Nana are destined to reunite, so too will fans eventually get to revisit this beloved series.
To honor the mangaka’s 40-year career and the 25th anniversary, a new fanbook titled “The World of NANA” has been launched. This book not only includes an extensive interview with the artist but also features fresh sketches and additional content. During the interview, one question was posed about potential changes in the story’s direction, to which Ai Yazawa responded that the story had already reached its final stages before it took a break, and she vows to work diligently to allow her fans to re-read it at some point, regardless of any modifications made to the originally planned conclusion.
Nana’s Story Does Not Have Much Left
In the Q&A session titled “The World of Ai Yazawa’s NANA,” it was announced that NANA might be continued at some point in the future, not necessarily immediately.

Two individuals, Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu, bearing the same name but as different as night and day, forge an unforeseen bond following a chance encounter on a train, which ultimately leads them to cohabit in Tokyo. Osaki relocates to the metropolis with aspirations of fronting the punk band Blast, alongside Nobuo, Yasushi, and fresh recruit Shinichi. As Blast ascends in popularity and secures a contract with Gaia Records, Osaki’s romantic entanglement with Trapnest guitarist Ren thrusts them into the limelight. Trapnest, an already renowned group, consists of Ren, Reira, Takumi, and Naoki. The narrative intertwines their lives, relationships, and offers glimpses of an unpredictable future they all share.
As an onlooker, I must say that this year has been exceptionally rewarding for Nana enthusiasts, even amidst a scarcity of content. For starters, Ai Yazawa has been generously sharing sketches intermittently, a marked improvement from previous years. More significantly, the unveiling of her latest collaboration with Uniqlo (now available) is a promising indication that she’s regaining her creative vigor and recovering health. The mangaka’s 40th year in the industry is shaping up positively, a testament to her relentless efforts to regain her health and one day resume drawing.
This isn’t the first time she’s shared her intention to continue the manga someday. Back in 2022, during an interview with Da Vinci, she mentioned that she was gradually working on new drawings and that her art exhibition had given her a boost both physically and motivationally. Although things had been quiet since then, her recent artwork and collection indicate that she’s in better shape now. Her latest interview offers fans a glimpse into the progress of the story, making it exciting news indeed. With the creator herself confirming it, there’s no doubt that the return of Nana will be spectacular.
