Bluepoint Games, the studio known for its fantastic remakes of games like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, has been dissolved.
Sony shut down the studio earlier in 2024 because they couldn’t find a new project after canceling their plans for a live-service God of War game.
Fumito Ueda, the acclaimed creator of games like The Last Guardian and the new game gen ATLAS, recently told IGN he was very upset to hear about Japan Studio’s changes. He had been hoping for a chance to collaborate with the team again, and even discussed the possibility of remaking ICO.
He said:
Honestly, I was totally caught off guard by the news – I had no idea it was coming. We don’t work directly with the team behind it, so I found out just like everyone else, reading about it online. It was really disappointing and a bit sad, you know? I was hoping there might be a chance to collaborate with them on something down the line, but it’s definitely a bummer to hear they’re shutting down.
When asked about potential collaborations, Ueda praised the remakes the team had worked on. When pressed for a specific game he wished he’d been involved with, he replied with a smile, “Perhaps ICO.”
Bluepoint Games had a strong understanding of Fumito Ueda’s games thanks to their work on the Shadow of the Colossus remake and the 2011 HD collection featuring both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.
Before it closed, the studio reportedly proposed a more extensive remake of Shadow of the Colossus, but Sony rejected the idea and then closed the studio shortly after.
ICO is remembered as one of the PlayStation 2’s best games thanks to its moving story and unique visual style. Its gameplay, centered around the main character holding hands with Yorda, was particularly innovative for a Sony title.
Before The Last Guardian was finished, Ueda left PlayStation and started his own studio, genDESIGN. They then worked with Japan Studio to finally complete the long-awaited PS4 game.
The upcoming game ATLAS will be available on PlayStation 5, but Epic Games is handling the publishing across various platforms – Sony isn’t directly publishing it themselves.
