ITV has released never-before-seen footage from Princess Diana’s January 1997 trip to Angola, where she advocated for a worldwide ban on landmines, as part of a new episode of ‘Reporting History’.
Today’s episode features Steve Scott, who was ITV News’ Africa Correspondent and spent more time with Princess Diana than anyone else during her visit. It provides fresh perspectives on how she interacted with the media during a key period of her life.
Diana’s trip caused a lot of political debate because her push to ban landmines globally seemed to support the Labour Party’s stance on the issue at that time.
Footage from the princess’s interview with Scott, included in the episode, reveals she was happy to address the public conversation surrounding her trip to Angola, even though her advisors preferred she avoid the topic.
She stated that seemed like the most crucial issue, but quickly added that she wasn’t involved in politics.
In this episode, Scott shares his initial experience with Diana, explaining they met on a flight back from Angola. He remembers her speaking to him like a caring mother, rather than as Princess Diana.
Just months after her passing, Scott shared with Tom Bradby on Reporting History: “The woman I had been talking to about how much her sons meant to her was suddenly gone, and those boys were left without a mother.”
Reporting History is available to stream across ITVX, YouTube and all major podcast platforms.
