Following the release of Superman on screen, the DCU helmed by James Gunn has kicked off at full tilt. Gunn previously sketched out a roadmap for his Gods & Monsters saga’s initial chapter in the DC universe, and various projects are underway to bring numerous DC characters to life. Among these, I find myself particularly intrigued about Blue Beetle.
The Blue Beetle is set to stand out in the upcoming DC universe, as Xolo Maridueña will continue portraying this character from the previous film series. Previously uncertain about how this would play out, it was recently disclosed that a Blue Beetle animated series has been developed. ScreenRant had a chat with Maridueña regarding his character’s transition to animation, and the actor expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity.
The universe has been unveiled, akin to Pandora’s Box! It’s simply captivating, this realm of animation. I’ve grown fond of it, cherishing every opportunity to delve deeper and strive to mold this character perfectly. Having previously worked on Blue Beetle, I am now acquainted with the character and his voice. I eagerly anticipate bringing him to life in the medium of animation and discovering the tales we can weave that would be impossible in live-action. Among my favorites are Avatar: The Last Airbender, Young Justice, and Studio Ghibli’s masterpieces. I’m thrilled about the diverse sources of inspiration the creatives are tapping into, and I can’t wait to see where Blue Beetle fits within this grand tapestry.
The question of how Blue Beetle will harmonize in the new DCU is quite puzzling, as we’re currently adapting bits from the old franchise into the new system. Actors are progressing with their roles, but not all stories they were previously involved in will align with the new DCU. This has resulted in situations like Peacemaker Season 2 being part of the DCU, whereas not every episode from Season 1 will be.
It’s quite probable that we’ll have to watch the upcoming animated series to determine which movie elements are considered canon, if any at all. Regardless, Xolo Maridueña appears enthusiastic about progressing with the character and appreciates the excitement surrounding future developments. He went on to say…
This movie character has made a significant impact on me for the past two years. It’s been truly rewarding to see his positive influence spread across this vast universe. Plus, it brings me great joy that he was the trailblazer, and now he’s surrounded by so many beloved, familiar figures and a multitude of diverse characters. I can only hope to keep expanding these boundaries and taking creative risks in the future.
The progress of the series remains uncertain, which means we don’t know exactly when it will air. Let’s hope it won’t take too much time, because Xolo Maridueña might not be able to hold back his enthusiasm for long.
