Tom Holland is currently playing Spider-Man in a series of movies. While he’s working on his latest film, there’s been a lot of talk about potential future Marvel projects for previous Spider-Men, especially Tobey Maguire. Recently, rumors have suggested Maguire might star in another Spider-Man movie, and writer Mattson Tomlin has admitted he’s been trying to make it happen. Many, including myself, are curious if this will actually come to fruition, and Tomlin has now shared his thoughts on the possibility.
Mattson Tomlin is a rising name in superhero films, notably contributing to The Batman (though uncredited) and officially co-writing its sequel with director Matt Reeves. While he’s proven his talent with Gotham stories, he’s also expressed a strong interest in working on Spider-Man. Earlier this month, Tomlin shared that he’d love to pitch a fourth film featuring the web-slinger, and when asked if he thought it would actually happen, he said:
Progress may be slow, but consistent effort will eventually succeed. While many factors outside of my control are at play, and it’s a complex situation, I haven’t received a definitive rejection yet, which is encouraging.
The writer of Project Power shared a thoughtful response on X during a fan Q&A. They admitted they’re not confident a new Spider-Man project will happen, but also said they haven’t been definitively told it won’t. This highlights how difficult it is to get a project approved in Hollywood, while still offering Spider-Man fans a little bit of hope.
Mattson Tomlin isn’t the only one hopeful about a fourth Spider-Man movie continuing the story from Sam Raimi’s films. Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson, has said she’d be happy to return, and she’s even suggested a storyline where Peter and MJ are parents – an idea many fans would enjoy! Before this, there was already talk about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield potentially appearing in future Spider-Man movies made by Sony.

Disney+ offers streaming access to movies like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films. You can subscribe for as little as $11.99 per month with ads. For ad-free viewing, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here!
Even though rumors are still circulating, production is underway on Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie, and excitement is building. Sony and Marvel Studios are keeping the story details secret. However, we know the film will start a new storyline for Holland’s Peter Parker, and he’ll be sharing the screen with Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. As a nod to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man, Holland’s suit will also feature some updated designs.
Whether Tobey Maguire will reprise his role as Spider-Man in a future solo movie or as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse remains uncertain. However, writer Mattson Tomlin seems optimistic about the potential for a fourth film featuring Maguire’s Spider-Man.
