Jack Black Revealed The Pixar Movie He Regrets Turning Down, And I Could Have Totally Seen Him Killing That Role

Jack Black is known for enthusiastically taking on unusual, energetic, and surprisingly touching roles. That’s why it’s surprising to hear about a big animated movie part he now regrets turning down. Looking back, he doesn’t seem upset about it—just aware that the film became a classic without his involvement.

During a recent interview with Paul Rudd to promote their upcoming 2025 comedy, a remake of Anaconda, actor Black shared a story about a role he wished he’d landed. When asked if there was a part he regretted missing out on, he quickly responded with a revelation.

I was actually offered a role in The Incredibles – I played Syndrome! It’s one of my all-time favorite movies, and I do regret turning down the part.

Honestly, when I heard about this role, my first thought was Jack Black – his over-the-top energy seemed perfect, especially when I imagined him channeling Syndrome. It just felt like a part written for his voice and comedic timing. That’s why hearing he actually turned it down is so disappointing in hindsight – it really stings knowing how well he would have fit!

The lead developer of Minecraft explained that his reluctance wasn’t about the animation quality. It stemmed from his first impression of the character, and he continued by saying:

I turned down the role. I told the director, Brad Bird – who I wasn’t familiar with – that the character felt flat and lacked depth. I said I’d consider it if they rewrote the part to make him more complex, but he immediately dismissed me.

The director, Brad Bird, later created one of Pixar’s most popular and critically praised animated films of all time. The villain, Syndrome, wasn’t a simple character; he developed into a witty, compelling, and surprisingly emotional antagonist, greatly contributing to the movie’s enduring success.

The lead singer of Tenacious D said seeing the completed movie was a surprisingly modest experience for him. He then added:

I realized I made a mistake. The movie eventually came out and was fantastic, and I regretted being so uncooperative beforehand.

It’s easy to understand why Jack Black would have been a good fit for the role. The character, Syndrome, combines the bitterness of a disappointed fan with dramatic flair and a sense of humor – qualities Jack Black excels at. Although Jason Lee famously voiced the character, it’s easy to imagine Jack Black delivering a similarly memorable performance.

You know, it’s not that Jack Black regrets doing big-budget movies, it’s like those experiences really showed him what he loved about filmmaking. Since Nacho Libre, he’s really focused on voice work in animated films – everything from Kung Fu Panda to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s clear he’s determined to be part of projects he truly believes in and doesn’t want to let another great opportunity pass him by.

You can currently watch Pixar’s The Incredibles on Disney+. Meanwhile, Jack Black is starring in the new movie Anaconda in theaters. He’s also bringing back a popular character – Bowser – in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy film.
