Jack Black steadily built his career over time, starting with small roles in ’90s films like Dead Man Walking, The Cable Guy, and Mars Attacks! He became a major star after his role in High Fidelity and has since led many popular and memorable films, including Kung Fu Panda and A Minecraft Movie. While fans wait for his return as Bowser in the next Super Mario Galaxy Movie, they can enjoy his best film now on Tubi.
Okay, so I was thrilled to see that Richard Linklater’s School of Rock landed on Tubi on February 1st! This 2003 comedy, starring Jack Black, is a classic for a reason. He plays Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck guitarist who hilariously cons his way into a substitute teaching gig at a fancy private school. But instead of teaching them academics, he discovers his students have musical talent and secretly trains them to be a rock band, all with the goal of winning a local competition. It’s just a really fun movie, and the supporting cast – including Joan Cusack, Mike White, and Sarah Silverman – is fantastic.
Jack Black’s School of Rock Is a 2000s Masterpiece That Still Holds Up
While School of Rock is highly rated with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s actually Jack Black’s third highest-rated movie – The Muppets takes the top spot with 95%. However, School of Rock is undeniably the film that truly defined his career. The role of Dewey Finn was a perfect fit for Black, allowing him to showcase both his musical abilities and comedic timing, and it cemented his status as a leading comedic actor. The young cast members were equally impressive, matching Black’s energy and musical talent in memorable songs like the energetic finale and the band’s rock ballad, “In the End of Time.”
Even after over twenty years, School of Rock is still a beloved and enjoyable film. It’s a funny and heartwarming comedy about a group of kids who discover their confidence and happiness through rock music. Balancing hilarious scenes – like Dewey’s rebellious lesson and the unforgettable ‘roast’ – the movie tells a genuinely touching story about finding your voice and challenging the status quo. Plus, the rock soundtrack is still fantastic and fun to sing along with!
What’s New on Tubi?
Tubi offers a large library of free movies, and February brought even more options to the platform. Now you can stream titles like Marvel’s Runaways, Jurassic World, all three Taken movies, 13 Going on 30, and the original Spy Kids trilogy, all for free.
