The popular action movie that started Hollywood’s interest in the Jack Reacher character is coming to Pluto TV for free. Starring Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher will be available to stream on the platform next month.
Starting November 1st, Pluto TV subscribers will be able to watch the action movie Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise. The film follows Jack Reacher, a former military police officer, as he investigates a seemingly random mass shooting committed by a highly skilled sniper. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who would later direct Mission: Impossible films), Jack Reacher premiered in 2012 and was based on Lee Child’s 2005 novel, One Shot. While critics gave it a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was a box office success, earning over $215 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.
Following the success of the first Jack Reacher film, a sequel titled Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was released in 2016. The film is based on Lee Child’s 2013 novel of the same name. Although Stephen McQuarrie returned as a producer, Edward Zwick – who previously directed Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai – took over as director. Never Go Back sees Jack Reacher teaming up with Army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) while on the run from the law, as they uncover a dangerous conspiracy.
Although Never Go Back featured exciting action and a strong performance by Tom Cruise, it didn’t perform as well as Paramount hoped. It didn’t receive the same positive reviews (only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes) or earn as much money at the box office ($162 million) as the previous film. Director Christopher McQuarrie mentioned in 2020 that he and Cruise had discussed making another Reacher movie, potentially with a more mature R-rating, but a third film doesn’t appear to be in the works at this time.
Jack Reacher Was Rebooted for the Small Screen With Alan Ritchson
Following a disappointing performance in theaters with Never Go Back, the Jack Reacher series found new life on television. Alan Ritchson took over the role from Tom Cruise, and the show Reacher has become a major hit for Prime Video, leading to plans for both a fourth season and a spin-off series. Currently in production since June, the new season features returning star Alan Ritchson alongside new cast members Christopher Marquette, Sydelle Noel, Agnez Mo, Anggun, and Kevin Corrigan.
Before the next season of Reacher arrives, Prime Video will release a new series called Neagley. The show follows the private investigator Neagley as she investigates the suspicious death of a close friend, determined to find justice. According to the official description, Neagley will use her skills gained from working with Jack Reacher and her experience as a member of the 110 Special Investigators to expose a dangerous threat.
Jack Reacher arrives on Pluto TV on Nov. 1.
