Jack Reacher’s Sherlock Inspiration Makes Sense After New Prime Video Show

The early Jack Reacher novels drew inspiration from Sherlock Holmes in several ways, a connection that becomes even clearer after watching the new Prime Video series, Young Sherlock.

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, like many books, are influenced by a variety of detective stories and ideas. The character himself was partly inspired by the author’s own life experiences. However, instead of simply copying existing detective tropes, Child created a unique identity for Reacher by intentionally challenging and reshaping the typical conventions of the crime thriller genre.

It’s interesting to note that when Lee Child originally created the Jack Reacher character, he drew a lot of inspiration from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher Was Heavily Inspired By Sherlock Holmes

Many popular movies and TV shows about Sherlock Holmes highlight his incredible ability to solve mysteries using deduction. Because of this, it’s easy to think of that as his defining trait. But those familiar with the original stories know Sherlock is also a very capable fighter, often able to defend himself in difficult and dangerous situations.

Examining Sherlock Holmes’s characteristics and skills shows striking parallels with Jack Reacher. Author Lee Child even admitted, in an interview with Collider, that Reacher was intentionally inspired by the famous detective, calling it “a very conscious homage.”

He explained that his character always needed a mix of intelligence and physical strength. Like Sherlock Holmes, Reacher is capable in a fight, but he’s most powerful because of his sharp mind and ability to anticipate his opponents’ moves.

The first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor, includes a clear nod to Sherlock Holmes. Lee Child demonstrates Reacher’s impressive deductive reasoning skills – much like Holmes – with a scene where he figures out Finlay is divorced and quit smoking in April.

The Prime Video series Reacher, based on Lee Child’s novels, openly acknowledges its connection to the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. The climactic fight in season 3, between Reacher and Paulie, was intentionally inspired by the legendary battle between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, as confirmed by Lee Child. This parallel is a clear nod to the classic story The Final Problem.

Reacher Sherlock Inspiration Makes Even More Sense After Prime Video’s New Show

Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock on Prime Video is based on Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes books. Instead of a typical detective show, this series focuses on Holmes as a teenager, showing how he grew up and developed into the famous detective we know.

It’s hard to avoid noticing similarities between young Holmes and Reacher in many scenes from the show.

Similar to Jack Reacher, the young Sherlock Holmes in the Young Sherlock stories was raised within the strict environment of a powerful organization – in his case, a formal Victorian Oxford. Despite being shaped by these institutions, both characters ultimately developed independent and rebellious beliefs.

Sherlock openly challenged Victorian social norms, while Reacher did the same by choosing to leave the military and live a wandering life.

Both Young Sherlock and season one of Reacher explore the impact of older brothers on the main characters. In Young Sherlock, we see how Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft, represents the life Sherlock could have had if he’d chosen a more conventional path. Similarly, Reacher introduces a brother who, like Mycroft, offers guidance but has chosen a very structured and rule-oriented life.
