Jackpot!’s John Cena Details His Character Work Creative Process, Speaks On Machine Gun Kelly Reunion

As a long-time fan of John Cena, I’ve seen him transform from a WWE superstar to a versatile actor who can tackle any role thrown his way. His latest venture, “Jackpot!”, is no exception. Cena once again demonstrates his knack for playing characters with depth and charm, all while keeping us entertained with his quick wit and physical prowess.

In various physical confrontations, John Cena often finds himself outnumbered, making his character choice in his newest action-comedy film particularly fitting. In the movie titled “Jackpot!“, directed by Paul Feig, we find John Cena playing the role of Noel. Set a few years from now, when the economy has plummeted, California hosts a regular “Grand Lottery” to stimulate their finances. However, in a twist reminiscent of “The Purge“, the winner can be legally killed before sunset to claim their multi-billion dollar prize. Unlike other contestants, Noel is not participating but instead provides security services to winners for a share of the winnings.

John Cena Details His Characters’ Creative Process

At first glance, Noel seems to embody the classic character of John Cena: swift wit, strong physique, and charisma that’s courageous to the core. However, similar to his past roles as Ricky Stanicky and Peacemaker, Cena brings a unique touch to his latest performance, “Jackpot!”, which lends Noel a richness and distinct personality.

As a gamer, I strive to grasp the concepts thoroughly while simultaneously brainstorming unique ways to showcase them. At the same time, I remain open-minded and receptive to coaching, ready to adapt and improve my performance. One piece of advice that has greatly benefited me from different directors is, “Discard any brilliant ideas you have and follow this approach instead.” I believe that being coachable could be the secret sauce that helps me continually grow as a performer.

Cena’s character, Noel, pairs up with Awkwafina’s newly crowned Grand Lottery winner, Katie, who now has a massive target on her back. In an attempt to avoid the relentless money-grabbers of Los Angeles, Noel and Katie accidentally find themselves at Machine Gun Kelly’s residence.

performing alongside MGK completes Cena’s entertainment journey, as the artist from the “Tickets to my Downfall” previously opened Big Match John’s WWE WrestleMania 28 entrance before his debut fight against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

In a statement, Cena praised MGK, saying, “He was absolutely remarkable during his performance, truly outstanding.” This moment was extraordinary in my career, and I’m grateful he was there to contribute to it. His performance added an extra layer of grandeur to the event.”

It felt great to reconnect with him after all these years, and I was able to express my gratitude for his role in the past events. I told him something like, “Hey buddy, I’m really grateful you were involved because you added so much and improved things.” Cena went on to say that when he finally met him on set, he was eager to do jokes and comedy. His humility and vulnerability were unexpected but a delightful surprise. I didn’t realize those qualities existed in him, and it was refreshing to witness them.

Jackpot! premieres on Prime Video on August 15th.
