Jacob Elordi was feeling less than euphoric about these reactions.
After the movie Saltburn came out in 2023, a scene where Barry Keoghan’s character drinks water from a bathtub after Jacob used it caused a lot of shock and discussion. However, Jacob, the actor who plays the character, believes the reaction actually reflects how people view things today.
The 28-year-old explained on the November 6th episode of the Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast that the reaction to something surprised them, revealing how easily people are shocked. They felt there was much more intense and graphic content in other movies they’d seen.
The Frankenstein actor also pointed out that the scene wasn’t even the most disturbing thing you can find online, saying, “You can see more shocking things just by watching true crime remakes that are popular on streaming services.”
Jacob went on to say he found something deeply disturbing – the unsettling pleasure some people seem to derive from seeing harm come to children. He explained that this was the aspect of the situation that particularly caught his attention.
Okay, so everyone was talking about Saltburn, right? And honestly, when I heard what the director, Emerald Fennell, said about it… it just made me love it even more. She called it just a ‘little bit taboo,’ and that’s exactly it! It’s fiction, yes, but it’s the kind of fiction that gets under your skin and makes you think. It’s not trying to be anything it’s not, and that honesty? It’s brilliant. I’ve watched it like, five times already, and I still find new things! It’s just…perfect.
“And that makes people’s skin crawl,” he mused. “It’s an interesting parallel.”

People often ask Jacob about the famous bathtub scene, and he was surprisingly happy to see it—and the equally startling gravesite scene—included in the final cut of the film.
He explained to Stream Wars in 2023 that he was thrilled by that scene because it’s rare to see such content in popular films. He praised the director, Emerald, for taking risks and challenging audiences.
Following the popularity of the movie Saltburn, a bathtub candle inspired by it was released, and Jacob had the chance to smell it firsthand.

He described the scent around him as smelling like a laundry room—specifically, like detergent—and added, “His clothes are clean,” during an appearance on The Tonight Show in 2024.
And of course, the Euphoria actor had a few questions about the candles themselves.
“I want to know who’s making the money,” he joked. “Like, ‘Great, where’s my money?'”
