Guillermo del Toro’s version of “Frankenstein” for Netflix is generating a lot of excitement as one of the most anticipated remakes of classic monster movies since Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” was released last year. A significant part of this anticipation stems from the talented team working on the film, with del Toro (who won an Oscar for “The Shape of Water”) known for creating and bringing to life intricate, fantastical worlds and creatures on screen. Del Toro’s style fits perfectly with the heavy, stylish horror genre that Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” represents, as seen in his previous works such as “Hellboy” and “Crimson Peak.
In this movie, we have an impressive lineup of actors, including Oscar Isaac, best known for Marvel’s “Moon Knight,” who portrays Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Joining him are Mia Goth, Fleix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Christian Convery, and Ralph Ineson, collectively making up the rest of the cast. However, it’s Jacob Elordi, known for his roles in “Euphoria” and “Saltburn,” who steals the show as “The Creature” or “Frankenstein’s Monster.
First Look At Jacob Elordi In Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro states that Jacob is the ideal actor for the monster in his version of ‘Frankenstein.’ He adds that they have a remarkable, almost telepathic connection where Jacob understands and delivers the role with minimal guidance from him.”

In the initial glimpses of Frankenstein and its creature, we see two distinct appearances for Elordi. One depicts him disguised as a cloaked, masked figure resembling a living corpse, likely concealing himself to navigate the ordinary world without causing unnecessary suspicion. The second image displays the Creature in a more exposed and fragile state, pinned down by Victor Frankenstein who seems to be working on his creation (Del Toro can be seen in a behind-the-scenes shot, guiding Isaac and Elordi through the scene).
As a cinephile, I can’t help but express my belief that there is no actor more fitting for the role of the creature than Jacob. In our conversations, we seem to share an almost supernatural understanding. It’s as if words are scarcely needed, and his actions speak volumes.
In my perspective as a movie critic, I can’t wait to dive into the chilling reimagination of ‘Frankenstein’. Chris Elordi promises an unsettling transformation into a creature of life and death, and I’m eagerly anticipating his portrayal. The real intrigue lies in how he will breathe humanity into this monster character, only to contrast it with the deep-seated father-son conflict that lies at the core of this timeless horror tale. It’s going to be a compelling exploration of life, death, and the complexities of human relationships.

In his talk at Netflix’s Tudum event, Del Toro shared that the creation of his latest project represents the conclusion of a lifelong journey for him. As a child, he was captivated by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, and the character resonated with him so deeply it felt almost spiritual. Monsters have come to symbolize his personal philosophy.
Throughout his films, you can find traces of Frankenstein’s storyline. He consistently delves into themes of humanity and monstrosity, creator and creation, fatherhood, and offspring. These narratives have been the driving force behind many of his stories. In fact, he has been eager to bring this project to life for over two decades – ever since he dreamt of making it even before owning a camera. Now, after 25 years of pursuing it, the film has become so personal that it feels like a biography to him.
Frankenstein will premiere on Netflix in November.
