With the official announcement of the next James Bond actor coming soon, the latest reimagining of the character will portray a more contemporary figure. After many years, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have handed over creative control of the James Bond franchise to Amazon.
We’re still waiting to hear what Amazon plans for the future of James Bond, but a new video game, 007 First Light, might give us some hints about the direction of the movies. And the latest news about the game is likely to upset some fans.
In a recent interview with MonsterVine, Martin Emborg, narrative and cinematic director for the upcoming James Bond game, 007 First Light, explained that while the new Bond will still have some familiar traits—even the ones some find problematic—he won’t be a simple throwback to older versions of the character. When asked if the new 007 would be a womanizer, Emborg responded…
Absolutely. As they mentioned earlier, the character of James Bond has changed over time. He’s adapted to reflect today’s values, so you won’t see the same Bond as in older films – that wouldn’t resonate with audiences now. He’s a much more contemporary character.
The “Old School” Era of the “Bond Girl” Is Over

Recent years have seen criticism of early James Bond films for their portrayal of women. For example, Sean Connery’s Bond physically assaulted a masseuse in Goldfinger, and Roger Moore’s Bond slapped and threatened a woman, Andrea Anders, in The Man with the Golden Gun. The problematic names given to some female characters have also drawn criticism.
I’m really hoping things have changed since those older Bond films, like Emborg says. It sounds like the new Bond in 007 First Light might still have some flirty side, but it’ll be handled differently now. Instead of being seen as cool, those behaviors will probably be shown as a flaw – which is a good thing, considering how things were portrayed in the past.
The James Bond franchise has already begun to change how it portrays women. Daniel Craig’s films showed Bond’s flaws, including how he treated women, and featured strong female characters like Nomi and Paloma in No Time to Die – played by Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas – as capable action heroes. Though some fans disliked these changes, the next Bond film seems determined to continue this trend. It remains to be seen if Amazon will take a similar approach with its upcoming series.

The next James Bond film, currently titled 007 First Light, is expected to feature a significantly younger Bond than viewers have seen before. Actor Patrick Gibson, known for Dexter: Original Sin, will play the role, suggesting the movie will be a fresh start, moving away from the style of previous actor Daniel Craig. The film has been pushed back to a release date of May 28, 2026. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune, will direct the following film, James Bond 26.
