The debut trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is now available, offering viewers a breathtaking sneak peek at the upcoming third chapter in James Cameron‘s groundbreaking sci-fi saga, “Avatar”. This fresh footage introduces a new, combustible conflict and a more belligerent Na’vi tribe, hinting at heightened tension for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his kin. As excitement mounts for this highly anticipated sequel, Cameron has plans well into the future, with “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively. Moreover, the director is not limiting his vision for Pandora to just the film series; he is also working on an animated anthology TV show that will delve into previously unexplored corners of the franchise, according to a recent interview with “Empire” magazine.
Cameron expressed to Disney a desire for an animated series set in their world, but with stories that deviate from what’s typically expected. This series might also include standalone features, either for streaming or theaters. This project would provide a platform for tales that don’t align with the main films’ narratives and character development, broadening the scope for world-building.
Cameron used ‘The Animatrix’ in the Matrix universe as an example of how such diversification can enrich worlds like Avatar by delving into lesser-known aspects. He further explained that the anthology could explore backstories and events occurring off-screen within the movies, such as the first landing on Pandora or the initial expedition. Essentially, this series would offer a chance to venture anywhere in the Avatar universe.
Cameron acknowledged that not much work has been done on the project so far. He explained that they are currently collecting stories and similar materials, and he’s on a quest to discover talented filmmakers and animators who share his vision for this new Pandora series. This suggests that the animated show is in its early stages, with the creative team primarily focusing on generating ideas and identifying suitable talent to breathe life into these fresh Pandora narratives. With successful animated anthologies like Love, Death + Robots, Star Wars: Visions, and Secret Level having been released recently, it’s promising that Cameron will find the right individuals to bring his concept to fruition.
Everything We Know About Avatar: Fire and Ash
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story post-The Way of Water, as the Sully family, particularly missing their eldest son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), struggle with grief. A new adversary emerges in the form of the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the “Ash People,” a volcanic Na’vi tribe led by the fierce warrior Varang (Oona Chaplin). Cameron aims to challenge the traditional narrative of good vs evil among both humans and Na’vi, portraying the Ash People as a more complex, hardened Na’vi faction due to their challenging past. The trailer suggests that Varang and her fire-controlling clan could potentially join forces with the returning Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and his RDA human forces.
The movie, titled “Fire and Ash,” is set to offer a fresh perspective as well. Instead of Jake Sully being the main storyteller, his son Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) will now be at the forefront, indicating Lo’ak’s increasing significance in the series. It’s also been disclosed that each sequel will introduce a new narrator, enabling viewers to witness the evolving events from diverse angles. This narrative shift is poised to mark a significant turning point for the Sully family and Pandora, with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), Ronal (Kate Winslet), and Spider (Jack Champion) rejoining the cast.
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025.
