The Avatar franchise has already earned over $4 billion and shows no signs of stopping. The upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, releasing this December, is expected to be a major box office success. Plans are already underway for two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, scheduled to premiere in 2029 and 2031. These films will conclude a 22-year project for director James Cameron. Given this release schedule, fans might expect production on Avatar 4 to begin soon to stay on track. However, Cameron recently shared some surprising thoughts on the matter.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cameron explained that he shot some scenes for Avatar 4 while filming Avatar: The Way of Water and a yet-to-be-titled film. He said the characters will age about eight years between the third and fourth movies, meaning the child actors won’t play those roles for much longer. He also noted that production on Avatar 4 is on hold until Avatar 3 earns enough money to fund it.
Could the Next Avatar Sequels Be Delayed?

Although it seems likely that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be a financial success – the first two Avatar movies both earned over $2 billion – director James Cameron has expressed some concerns. He’s worried about maintaining a healthy profit margin and might need to find ways to reduce costs if future films don’t perform as well. Because the Avatar movies are so costly to make, even a slight decrease in ticket sales could affect overall profits. While Fire and Ash is unlikely to fail, it’s not guaranteed to reach the $2 billion mark, even with Cameron at the helm.
As a huge fan, I know James Cameron always pushes the limits with his filmmaking, so it doesn’t surprise me that the Avatar movies take so long to make! For example, they filmed The Way of Water and The Next Generation (originally Fire and Ash) all at once, starting in 2017 and wrapping up in 2020 – though COVID did cause some delays. We don’t know if he’ll film Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 together like that, but even just one of those movies will take a long time to shoot. If Avatar 4 is still aiming for a 2029 release, they really need to get going with production soon, especially because bringing Pandora and all those characters to life requires a ton of work after filming is done.
While Avatar 4 is likely still happening, it’s wise that James Cameron isn’t rushing into planning it right now. He might simply want a break from the Avatar world and work on a different film first. Though dedicated to the franchise, Cameron has other projects, like Ghosts of Hiroshima, that he’s eager to pursue. From a business standpoint, it also makes sense to explore more efficient ways to produce future Avatar films. Cameron is correct that movie budgets are getting too high, and studios are looking to cut costs on sequels, so even a successful franchise like Avatar could benefit from streamlining production to improve profits.
It took 13 years for James Cameron to release the sequel to Avatar, The Way of Water, proving he’s willing to take as much time as needed to perfect his films. If he decides to pause the Avatar series before making the fourth movie, he’s certainly earned that right. A break would also allow Cameron and his team to refine the script, potentially incorporating feedback from audiences about the existing films. There are good reasons to slow down and not rush into Avatar 4, even though Disney and 20th Century Studios likely want it released as soon as possible – ultimately, the decision rests with Cameron.
