James Cameron Exciting New Fantasy Movie Gives Him an Avatar Replacement (But There’s a Catch)

James Cameron, the acclaimed director behind films like *Terminator*, *True Lies*, *Aliens*, and *Titanic*, was once incredibly prolific. However, in the last 28 years, he’s only released three movies – all of which have been part of his *Avatar* franchise, though they were all huge box office successes. Fortunately, after dedicating over a decade to the world of Pandora, Cameron is now developing several new projects, including a unique adaptation of a fantasy story.

Before the release of the next *Avatar* film, *Avatar: Fire and Ash* – which will likely be the last for several years (with a fourth film planned for December 2029 and *Avatar 5* in December 2031) – James Cameron has signed on to adapt two books into movies. These are *Ghosts of Hiroshima*, a true story about a man who survived both atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and *The Devils*, a fantasy novel. While *The Devils* seems like a great fit for Cameron’s next big project, there’s already a potential issue brewing.

The Devils Movie Could Be Great, But What Will James Cameron’s Role Be?

Abercrombie’s book presents a unique world, similar to our own but filled with magical creatures and unexpected historical events. When a difficult mission arises, Brother Diaz must gather a diverse and unlikely team – including mercenaries, magicians, and monsters – to complete it. This is a large-scale story, different from anything the author has done before, and has the potential to launch a whole new series.

Shortly after the release of Abercrombie’s book this June, Cameron announced on Facebook that he’d acquired the rights to make a film based on The Devils. He plans to write the screenplay with the author through his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment. Currently, that’s the full extent of his involvement – it’s still uncertain whether he’ll direct, though he intends to begin writing it after he finishes Avatar: Fire and Ash. While Cameron often develops projects that are later directed by someone else (like Alita: Battle Angel), this situation presents a particular challenge.

If James Cameron doesn’t direct the film adaptation of *The Devils*, it risks being a disappointing result. Cameron has a consistent track record of success, making him uniquely qualified to handle such a complex and detailed story. However, if someone else takes on the project and doesn’t deliver, excitement for the film could quickly disappear.

Another possibility is that James Cameron might direct a film adaptation of *The Devils*, which creates a scheduling challenge for fans. He could potentially fit it in between *Avatar: Fire and Ash* and the next *Avatar* movie, but his projects often take a long time to develop and are frequently delayed, so finding the time might be difficult. Alternatively, if he waits to direct *The Devils* until after *Avatar 5* is finished, production wouldn’t begin until 2032 at the earliest – seven years from now.

People are eagerly anticipating *The Devils*, and many hope James Cameron will direct it. Let’s hope this movie actually gets made and doesn’t end up as another one of his projects that never see the light of day.
