James Cameron Needs To Make the ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Sequel

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez created something truly special with Alita: Battle Angel. It was more than just an exciting, action-packed cyborg film – it was a unique kind of science fiction. Alita: Battle Angel was a successful adaptation of the anime and manga source material, and we need more adaptations like it, particularly when made by directors with such talent and experience.

The story of Alita, a cyborg, has many exciting possibilities. The 2019 movie, based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga, takes place on a ruined, futuristic Earth. Alita (played by Rosa Salazar) is found broken and rebuilt by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), a kind-hearted scientist. However, their city, Iron City, is a dangerous place filled with crime and ruthless cyborgs.

Fans might have to wait just as long for the next Alita movie as they did for the first one. James Cameron first considered making a film based on Kishiro’s work back in 2003, and some of those ideas even showed up in his TV show Dark Angel, which explored similar themes. However, it took many years before Alita: Battle Angel finally reached the big screen.

Should We Blame the ‘Avatar’ Franchise?

The main reason it took so long to start the Alita movie was Avatar. James Cameron dedicated all his attention to finishing the 2009 hit film, which put the Alita script on hold. However, Cameron confirmed shortly after Avatar came out that the Alita script was already complete, even though it would still be another ten years before the movie was finally released.

James Cameron made a great decision in choosing Robert Rodriguez to direct. Rodriguez didn’t just shorten Cameron’s lengthy script to a manageable two hours; he also captured the original story’s intense action and violence, delivering a thrilling, PG-13 experience with brutal cyborg fights. It was a perfect pairing, blending Cameron’s innovative motion capture technology with Rodriguez’s signature style of raw and energetic action.

Alita’s Story Must Continue

It took a little getting used to Alita’s large eyes, but the movie was a thrilling and gritty take on the cyberpunk genre. The visual effects were incredible, and the film didn’t shy away from dark themes as it told the story of a powerful young cyborg. While it left out some details from the original manga, it was still a smart and faithful adaptation.

As someone who loves the Battle Angel story, I noticed something interesting: the movie ends at pretty much the same spot as the original animated version. That anime, while really true to the source material in terms of how it looked and what happened, always felt way too short. It ended with a heartbreaking moment – Alita losing the boy she cared about. If you only watched that anime, you might think Rodriguez’s film finishes the whole story, even though there’s so much more content in the manga!

Will There Be an ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Sequel?

A sequel to Alita: Battle Angel is potentially in the works, and it won’t repeat the disappointing ending of the original anime. Director James Cameron recently told Empire magazine that he and Robert Rodriguez are currently writing the script. While fans are excited about the possibility of another film, they’ll need to be patient as it develops.

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are known for sticking with projects they’re passionate about, even if it takes years to bring sequels to life. Cameron revisited the world of Avatar with The Way of Water thirteen years after the original, and Rodriguez delivered Sin City: A Dame to Kill For nine years after the first Sin City film. They don’t abandon their ideas – they simply take their time getting them made, as evidenced by their commitment to Alita as well.
