James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel Soars On Streaming

James Cameron’s 2019 film, based on a well-known manga, is now finding success on streaming platforms. Cameron is a director known for many movies, especially science fiction action films over the past twenty years. He’s currently working on the new Avatar: Fire and Ash movie, but that’s just one of his recent projects.

James Cameron collaborated with director Robert Rodriguez to create the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel, which is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita. Set far in the future, the movie follows Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz) as he rebuilds Alita (Rosa Salazar), a cyborg who has lost her memory. As Alita tries to piece together her past, she becomes a target in the dangerous city of Iron City.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Alita: Battle Angel is experiencing a surge in popularity on streaming platforms. As of December 4, 2025, it’s currently ranked #6 globally on HBO Max, even reaching the top spot in eight countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. This renewed interest follows the film’s initial success in theaters back in 2019.

Despite receiving mixed reviews – with a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes – Alita: Battle Angel has gained a dedicated fanbase over time. The film was also financially successful, earning $405 million globally on a budget of around $150-200 million. This led to plans for a sequel, Alita: Battle Angel 2, which is currently still in development.

As a huge fan of Alita: Battle Angel, I was really excited to hear Rosa Salazar is eager to come back as Alita! She’s even written her own ideas for a sequel, which shows how much she loves the character and the original manga. But honestly, it’s all up in the air right now. James Cameron is still deep into finishing the Avatar sequels, and it’s not clear if Robert Rodriguez will be able to focus on Alita anytime soon. It’s a bit frustrating as a fan, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Despite being released in theaters six years ago, the film is suddenly very popular on streaming services, showing it still has a strong following. This is especially true internationally, where it’s experiencing a big comeback. While a sequel hasn’t been announced yet, there’s clearly continued interest in this world and its characters.

Currently, Alita: Battle Angel continues to resonate with audiences, even though there are no firm plans for a sequel.
