The Pokémon community is mourning a loss.
James Carter Cathcart, who had been a voice actor for many years in the English adaptations of the popular Japanese animated series, passed away at the age of 71. Martha Jacobi, his wife, shared this heartbreaking news on her Facebook page on July 10.
In a fan Facebook group, she mentioned that she was the wife of James Carter Cathcart and shared the sad news that he had passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.
She went on to say, “The funeral is scheduled for early August, right here in New York City. At this moment, we’re working out the details with a charity that was very special to Jimmy, and once everything is set up, I’ll share the information here.
Martha additionally expressed her thankfulness towards her audience, explaining that portraying Meowth, James, Professor Oak, among other Pokemon characters, held immense significance for her.
She expressed her gratitude to Jimmy’s long-time fans, acknowledging that their happiness was the primary reason he dedicated himself tirelessly to his work. Rest assured, they were deeply valued by him!
In 2023, I, a diehard fan, bid a tearful goodbye to my cherished idol, James, after he announced his retirement following a heartbreaking diagnosis with throat cancer. Known affectionately as “Jimmy Zoppi” by many, this remarkable artist graced not only the silver screen but also lent his talents to numerous animated series such as Aria: The Animation, Impy’s Island, The Three Musketeers, Little Bird’s Big Adventure, Sonic X, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Masters, and Mashed. Though he may no longer be actively involved in these projects, his indelible mark on the world of animation will forever remain a shining testament to his unparalleled passion and talent.
After his demise, Pokémon voice artist Erica Schroeder paid tribute to her late colleague in an Instagram post dated July 10th.
In a heartfelt message, she expressed, “May you find eternal rest, my dearest, sweet man. I’ll deeply miss you, not only me but also the community and the world at large. You were an extraordinary soul, filled with joy, exuberance, kindness, and immense talent. James Carter Cathcart, you were truly unique – a gentle, beautiful, playful genius whom I was fortunate to call my friend.”
She continued by acknowledging his multi-talented abilities beyond voice acting, “A master of the pen, piano, and microphone, you touched many hearts. You were cherished as a friend, adored as a loving father, and respected as a devoted husband. I’m grateful for the gifts you shared with us.
