James Gunn Addresses The Future Of The DCU Amid Netflix WBD Buyout

Following news of Netflix’s potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, James Gunn has provided clarity on the future of the DC Universe franchise. The possible purchase, a major topic of discussion in December 2025, led to questions about what it would mean for DC Studios and other parts of the company.

According to a Bloomberg report, David Zaslav expressed confidence in James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe, saying it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of where they watch. Zaslav explained that Gunn and Peter Safran aim to explore various commercial avenues for DC content, not just in cinemas and on HBO Max. He noted that some stories are best experienced in theaters, while others are better suited as streaming series.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, James Gunn emphasized the value of seeing big movies with others, stating, “The communal, theatrical experience is something that is incredibly important and remarkably well suited to our big spectacle films.” Peter Safran also discussed the future of the DC Universe, highlighting Gunn’s creative leadership: “What makes us irreplaceable is truly the mind of James Gunn. He’s been the architect of this grand vision.” Gunn finished with a strong statement about upcoming Batman films: “If you’re gonna make a Batman movie, it better be fing awesome.”

Zaslav also highlighted the strong creative work of James and Peter, noting it delivers both artistic value and financial success. He emphasized that DC offers the widest range of storytelling possibilities within their content library, and that no one currently possesses the same level of creativity and enthusiasm to bring these stories to life.

The DC Universe (DCU) kicked off in late 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos, followed by the Superman movie in July 2025. Superman became the year’s biggest superhero hit, and it outperformed all of Marvel Studios’ films in theaters.

According to Bloomberg, while James Gunn and Peter Safran weren’t part of the Warner Bros. Discovery sale talks, DC was a key topic for potential buyers. The first chapter of the new DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters,” is still planned for 2026 with several big movies and shows expected.

HBO’s new show, Lanterns, is expected to debut in early 2026, and the exact date will be announced soon. In movie news, Supergirl will premiere on June 26th, followed by the mature-themed film Clayface on September 11th.

I’m so excited to hear that the DCU is finally moving forward with James Gunn’s vision for Man of Tomorrow! It’s amazing to know they’re planning to start filming in April 2026 – I can’t wait to see it come to life.
