Following the positive reception to Superman, James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, quickly began working on the sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow. The film centers around a surprising team-up: Superman and his longtime enemy, Lex Luthor, must join forces to stop a major danger. Since the movie was first announced, fans have wondered what could possibly force these rivals to work together. A popular guess was the villain Brainiac, and reports suggest he will indeed be the main antagonist in Man of Tomorrow. Naturally, people have been speculating about who will play Brainiac, and James Gunn is now addressing those rumors and offering some insights.
James Gunn responded to rumors on Threads that his former Guardians of the Galaxy co-star, Dave Bautista, is likely to play Brainiac in the new DC Universe. Gunn pointed out he never confirmed Brainiac would even be in the movie. He then added that while he loves Bautista and has thought about potential roles for him in the DCU, they’ve never discussed anything about the Man of Tomorrow film. Gunn also clarified that none of the actors people have been speculating about have been auditioned or even considered for any roles.
Gunn added in another post that he usually ignores ridiculous rumors, and this one wasn’t even the strangest he’d heard lately. However, he found it particularly annoying because it involved a friend, Dave.
Dave Bautista Could Be a Great Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow (but Will It Happen?)

James Gunn’s recent statements have sparked a lot of discussion, particularly regarding reports about Brainiac appearing in Man of Tomorrow. While fans hoped for Brainiac’s inclusion, Gunn hasn’t officially confirmed or denied it. A month ago, industry publications reported Brainiac would be the film’s villain – a claim originating from a trustworthy source. Gunn didn’t directly address these initial reports, which likely led many to believe they were accurate. He often clarifies rumors about upcoming DC projects online, aiming to correct misinformation and manage fan expectations.
Many still believe Brainiac will be the main villain in a future Superman movie. He’s a powerful enough enemy that it would take both Superman and Lex Luthor working together to stop him. The upcoming Supergirl movie, which shows the destruction of Krypton, might be setting up Brainiac’s introduction. In some comic book versions, Brainiac actually destroys Krypton by stealing its city of Kandor, causing the planet to collapse. If Supergirl uses that storyline, it could introduce Brainiac and hint at a bigger role for him later on. James Gunn, the DCU head, hasn’t said anything publicly about Brainiac, likely because he’s either waiting to cast the actor or waiting until filming starts next spring to reveal more. Fans shouldn’t interpret Gunn’s recent statement as a denial that Brainiac will appear in a future movie.
It’s a shame to learn that Gunn hasn’t talked to Bautista about playing a role in Man of Tomorrow. Bautista would be a fantastic choice for the villain. Though many people know him as Drax from Marvel, he’s proven he’s a versatile actor, easily moving between serious and funny roles. He’s definitely capable of portraying Brainiac on the big screen, and he could capture the character’s intelligence while also creating a truly menacing presence. Seeing Bautista and Gunn collaborate on a DC project would be great, but casting Bautista as Brainiac would be a particularly brilliant move with the potential for huge success.
It’s no surprise James Gunn has several ideas for roles Dave Bautista could play in the new DC Universe. He maintains a strong relationship with his Guardians of the Galaxy cast and has already included some of them in his DC projects – Bradley Cooper as Jor-El being a prime example. Gunn often considers how Bautista or Chris Pratt might fit into the DCU, and if the perfect role comes along, he’ll make it happen. While it’s unclear if he’s specifically thought of Bautista for the role of Brainiac, it’s definitely a possibility. With Man of Tomorrow scheduled to begin filming soon, fans are hoping Gunn will share some official details about the movie – including who will play Brainiac – in the coming months.
