James Gunn Confirms How Long Man of Tomorrow Takes Place After Superman

After the success of the first DC Universe film, Superman, DC Studios quickly approved a sequel. Titled Man of Tomorrow, the new movie will team up David Corenswet as Clark Kent with his enemy Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to fight a new threat: Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). This marks the first time these two characters will be allies on screen in a DC live-action film. The sequel is also adding to the growing DC universe by introducing John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who will first appear in the HBO series Lanterns, and bringing back Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, after her own movie is released. As filming continues, James Gunn has discussed how Man of Tomorrow fits into the larger shared universe.

When a fan asked how soon after Superman the next movie takes place, James Gunn said it’s “basically real time.” Since Superman is scheduled for release in July 2025 and Man of Tomorrow will arrive on July 9, 2027, this means the sequel picks up roughly two years later. This detail clarifies that Lex Luthor, who was imprisoned at the end of Superman, will have been behind bars for about two years when Man of Tomorrow begins.

The Man of Tomorrow Timeline Placement Raises Questions About Other DCU Projects

Although Man of Tomorrow is set two years after other planned DCU projects, the timeline still fits well. James Gunn has confirmed that Supergirl, releasing June 26th, takes place between the Superman movie and Man of Tomorrow, allowing Supergirl to develop her story before joining the wider DCU team. The HBO series Lanterns, starting August 16th, will jump between two time periods – 2016 and 2026 – making it both a prequel and a current-day story. John Stewart’s appearance in Man of Tomorrow will happen after he’s been trained by Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler). And since Clayface is a prequel, this news doesn’t change its place in the timeline.

The timing of the new film, Man of Tomorrow, creates a bit of a puzzle regarding Peacemaker (John Cena). The last season of Peacemaker left him stranded on a dangerous planet called Salvation with no way to return, and the show isn’t currently planned to continue. This means his situation was always meant to be picked up in a future story. Unfortunately, it’s unclear what those stories might be. Man of Tomorrow focuses on Brainiac and doesn’t seem to have any plans to explain what’s happening to Peacemaker on Salvation, or even why the US government is using the planet. This leaves a two-year gap in the DC Universe timeline where a major character is missing and unaccounted for, with no upcoming movies or shows addressing this significant plot point.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
