James Gunn Debunks a Major DC Rumor After Fans Were Left Devastated for Weeks

James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, recently returned to social media after a brief break, and he’s frustrated with the amount of misinformation spreading about the DC Universe. He quickly started correcting false rumors, including ones about Batman’s future, and finally addressed a particularly upsetting rumor that fans had been concerned about for weeks.

DC’s Paradise Lost TV Series Confirmed To Still Be Happening

Recent reports suggest that James Gunn and Peter Safran are making significant changes to the DC Universe film and TV schedule announced in 2023. One of those changes reportedly involves cancelling the series Paradise Lost. The show would have been set in Themyscira – also known as Paradise Island – the ancient home of the Amazons, and would have explored the history of the island before Wonder Woman (Princess Diana) was born. As Peter Safran explained when the slate was first revealed, the series would have focused on the complex politics within this society of women.

A fan on Threads asked James Gunn if the reported cancellation of the Paradise project was true. Gunn quickly and clearly responded, “Definitely not.” He seemed frustrated, as he’d already debunked several incorrect rumors. He then jokingly complained, “I check Threads after weeks away and it’s just one wrong thing after another. What’s going on?”

The last update James Gunn gave regarding this project was in November 2024, when he told DC fans on social media that Paradise Lost was still actively being developed at DC Studios.

What Will Paradise Lost Be About?

The show was initially conceived as a fantasy epic similar to Game of Thrones, but focused on a society of women and featuring complex political maneuvering. In 2023, the creator hinted at exploring the origins of this all-female island, uncovering both its appealing and disturbing aspects, and delving into the power struggles among its leaders.

Wonder Woman’s popularity soared in the late 2010s, thanks to her first appearance in the movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, her own successful film Wonder Woman (2017), and the Justice League movies. This success also breathed new life into the character’s comic book stories, leading to fresh and innovative interpretations, like Tom King’s run in the 2020s and the new Absolute Wonder Woman series.

As a critic, I’ve been really impressed with the expanded backstory we’ve gotten for Wonder Woman’s world lately. The DC Black Label miniseries Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, which came out in 2021-2022, has given fans a ton of material to chew on, and I’m hearing a lot of buzz that it’ll heavily influence the upcoming Paradise Lost project. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnic with stunning art from Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott, Historia dives deep into the origins of the Amazons, revealing a surprisingly dark and compelling creation story – the Greek Goddesses secretly crafted them using the spirits of women tragically killed by men. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking addition to the Wonder Woman mythos.

The narrative then details how this hidden beginning causes friction and clashes between the gods and the Amazons right away. It follows Hippolyta, a human woman rescued by the Amazons, and her strong desire to become one of them. She’s eventually accepted into the tribe and, despite some disagreement, becomes the seventh Amazon queen. She will lead a society of women rescued from the outside world and adopted into the Amazonian ranks.

So, the series finally showed us how Zeus found out about the Amazons, even though the goddesses tried to keep them hidden. He was furious, naturally, and sent a whole army – including Heracles, you know, Hercules – to wipe them out. Hippolyta, stepping up as the one true queen of all the Amazon tribes, fought back, but eventually had to ride a magical horse all the way to Olympus to try and make a deal with Zeus. The deal? The Amazons would live long, peaceful lives on their island, but they’d never be able to leave and interact with the outside world. It absolutely crushed Hippolyta, but then the goddesses did something incredible. They healed an old wound from her past by magically creating a daughter for her out of clay! This daughter is clearly destined for something big, and gives Hippolyta a whole new reason to rule – not just as a queen, but as a mother, too. It was a really powerful moment.

I was completely captivated by Historia – the way it reimagined the Greek Gods, their abilities, and how they saw the world was just so creative! And the story of Hippolyta becoming Queen of the Amazons was powerfully intense. It feels like exactly the kind of ambitious, bold storytelling James Gunn and Peter Safran talked about for Paradise Lost, and I’m still really excited to see it happen whenever it gets the green light.

I’m still eagerly awaiting any news about when Paradise Lost might actually start filming. If you’re as excited about the DCU as I am, come chat about it with fellow fans on the ComicBook Forum!
