Following the release of *Superman* this summer, James Gunn announced that Season 2 of *Peacemaker* would directly connect to the film’s story. As the season unfolded, it became clear that *Peacemaker* would act as a link between Gunn’s first two DC Universe projects. Gunn recently emphasized that the *Peacemaker* Season 2 finale is crucial to the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* movie, suggesting it would set up key events. This sparked a lot of fan speculation, even after it was revealed David Corenswet wouldn’t be in *Peacemaker*. Now that the finale has aired, fans are trying to understand how everything fits together, and Gunn is offering some explanations. Be warned: spoilers for *Peacemaker* follow.
A fan on Threads asked James Gunn how the *Peacemaker* finale, “Full Nelson,” connects to the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow*. Gunn explained that everything happening at the end of the finale – Chris’s situation, the relationship between the government and people with superpowers, the new alliance between Rick and Lex, and their choices – will all play a role in the future of *Man of Tomorrow*, and beyond.
Salvation Will Play a Big Role in Man of Tomorrow
Although *Peacemaker* won’t be returning for a third season, James Gunn considers the character of Christopher Smith important to the future of the DC Universe. This means any unresolved plot points from the show will need to be addressed in other projects. The first season ended with a cliffhanger: after finding happiness and a sense of belonging, Peacemaker was exiled to Salvation, a planet used as a prison for people with superpowers, leaving him stranded and alone on an unfamiliar world with strange creatures nearby.
Whether John Cena will appear in *Man of Tomorrow* is still uncertain, but it’s probable given James Gunn’s intention to continue using the character. However, the events of *Salvation Run* will likely play a significant role in the story. While the adaptation probably won’t follow the comic book arc exactly – Lex Luthor is currently collaborating with the government, unlike his imprisonment in the original story – it could reimagine the core idea. This partnership between Luthor and Amanda Waller poses a threat to metahumans in the DCU, and *Man of Tomorrow* might open with ARGUS detaining groups like the Justice Gang, believing they’re acting for the greater good.
The planet Salvation might be connected to the main DC Universe and its villains. It’s possible a dangerous alien threat will emerge from Salvation and endanger Earth, potentially forcing Superman and Lex Luthor to work together. While Brainiac has often been predicted as the big villain, Salvation’s introduction could set the stage for Darkseid and his army to appear. We might even see characters like DeSaad scouting Earth for Darkseid, which would drive Lex Luthor to protect the planet – even though he’s a villain, he wants to defend his home from unknown dangers.
In the finale of *Peacemaker*, Chris and his team, the 11th Street Kids, created an organization called Checkmate, and this group could be important in the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* movie. With the government agency ARGUS now focused on metahumans, Superman will likely need to find help if his Salvation project fails. Checkmate seems like it could offer the resources he needs for his new mission. It will be fascinating to see how everything connects. James Gunn wants to make sure viewers don’t need to do a lot of research to enjoy DCU projects, but *Peacemaker* appears to be essential viewing before *Man of Tomorrow* is released.
