James Gunn, a key figure in the DC Universe (DCU), has recently provided an update on one of their long-awaited projects that seemed to have been temporarily shelved. Initially, when Gunn and Peter Safran took over the franchise, they announced several projects simultaneously. However, the production of “The Authority” has been halted, “Sgt Rock” has been placed on hold, and there have been whispers about potential cancellation of “Swamp Thing.” The initial lineup hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. Among the numerous TV shows they announced, one that had been relatively quiet until now has caught Gunn’s attention.
The upcoming TV series named “Waller,” featuring Viola Davis reprising her character Amanda Waller from the Suicide Squad films and Peacemaker, was announced. However, since its announcement, not much has been shared about the project. In a recent interview with People, Gunn confirmed that the project is still in development but is taking longer than anticipated. He stated, “We’re working on it, so we’ll see what happens. Some things have progressed quicker than others. The ‘Waller’ project hasn’t been the speediest. But I can’t wait to see Viola back in her Waller costume again.
Viola Davis, undeniably, first played the renowned character Amanda Waller in the critically panned film “Suicide Squad.” Despite the movie’s mixed reviews from both critics and viewers, Davis’ performance as Waller was widely acclaimed as one of the film’s standout aspects amidst its overall unevenness. So impressive was her portrayal that Gunn decided to have her return for “The Suicide Squad” sequel, and later announced a solo television series for Davis within the DC Studios line-up for the newly designed DC Universe. In addition, Davis appeared in two episodes during the first season of “Peacemaker,” but she hasn’t reprised her role since then.
The DCU Not Rushing Projects is A Good Thing
Previously, Peter Safran, Gunn’s co-head, admitted they had attempted several approaches to the project but hadn’t found the right fit just yet. Both DC heads have emphasized their commitment to only proceed with projects when they are fully satisfied with the scripts. They prioritize quality over timeliness and won’t begin production without a polished script ready for filming. This approach includes delaying some projects, such as the upcoming Clayface movie, which is next in line for DC Studios. This dedication to quality should reassure DC fans that Waller will be worth the wait.
It’s yet uncertain when Waller will fully materialize, but it will likely happen once both Gunn and Safran feel secure with the story they’ve crafted for Davis’ character. Davis’ portrayal of Waller was one of the highlights in the DCEU’s most unbalanced release, Suicide Squad. Her performances after the semi-reboot and in Gunn’s rebootquel, as well as Peacemaker, were equally impressive. She deserves a leading role in an appropriate project.
