It’s been over ten years since James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy introduced the team and became a huge hit. I still love a particularly funny scene with Michael Rooker as Yondu and Sean Gunn as Kraglin. Recently, a long-running rumor about that scene has resurfaced, and Gunn decided to set the record straight.
Even though James Gunn is now co-leading DC Studios with Peter Safran – and directing the new Superman movie and Man of Tomorrow – he still enjoys reminiscing about his work on Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, he responded to a social media post that claimed Michael Rooker’s improvisation of Yondu teasing the Broker caused Sean Gunn to laugh during filming. Gunn clarified on Threads that both moments were actually planned and written in the script.
Actually, the close-up shot of Sean was filmed later because we hadn’t gotten one during the original shoot and needed it for editing. He was standing in front of a green screen for that shot, and we added in a background image from the footage we already had. So it wasn’t really a big deal or a change to his performance. When people talk about ‘reshoots,’ that’s usually the kind of small fix my team is working on.

Movies are full of memorable improvised scenes, like Val Kilmer’s funny line in Top Gun. But this moment in Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t one of them. Yondu was always meant to begin speaking nonsense when the Broker emphasized the need for secrecy among his high-profile clients – which is why he couldn’t share details about the Orb or who might buy it. Kraglin’s reaction – trying to hide a smile then laughing at Yondu – was also planned, though director James Gunn revealed the close-up shot of Sean Gunn was filmed after the main filming had finished.
It’s a shame we didn’t get to see more scenes with Yondu and Kraglin together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 gave them more screen time, it also ended with Yondu’s sacrifice to save Peter Quill. Kraglin then took possession of Yondu’s Yaka arrow and the fin used to control it. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Kraglin finally learned to use the weapon effectively after experiencing a vision of Yondu during the battle on Knowhere. Both Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn also lent their voices to different versions of their characters in the Disney+ animated series, What If…?
Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn, both known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have continued to work with James Gunn on DC projects. They recently appeared in Season 2 of Peacemaker, with Rooker as Red St. Wild and Gunn as Maxwell Lord. While Red St. Wild likely won’t be back in the new DC Universe, this marks Rooker’s fourth DC role since 2021, suggesting James Gunn might find another part for him in the future.
