When James Gunn and Peter Safran began leading DC Studios, they quickly announced a comprehensive plan for future DC Universe projects. Their initial lineup, called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, includes five movies: *Superman* (released this summer), *Supergirl* (coming next year), and three still in development: *The Authority*, *The Brave and the Bold*, and *Swamp Thing*. They also confirmed five TV series, with *Creature Commandos* already available and *Lanterns* scheduled to premiere on HBO next year.
The DC Universe’s television plans have faced some challenges, similar to its films. Along with previously announced shows, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed a series based on Booster Gold is being developed, with David Jenkins (creator of *Our Flag Means Death*) writing the script. They also announced a fantasy series called *Paradise Lost*, exploring Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira, and a show centered on Amanda Waller. While updates on both of those have been scarce – and often, a lack of news is a positive sign – one of these projects has recently received disappointing news.
The DCU’s Amanda Waller TV Show Hits a “Rough Road”
During a press conference after the *Peacemaker* Season 2 finale, DC Studios head James Gunn discussed the future of the DC Universe, including the planned *Waller* TV series. Many expected *Waller* to directly follow the events of *Peacemaker*, especially after Viola Davis’s appearance and the reveal that Leota Adebayo is her daughter, combined with the exposure of Amanda Waller’s actions. However, Gunn indicated that developing the series is more complicated than initially thought.
Gunn explained that developing the Waller series has been challenging. Sometimes projects flow smoothly with strong scripts from the start, but this one has faced more difficulties. He reiterated that they won’t move forward with a show unless the scripts are solid, and they haven’t reached that point with the Waller series yet.
Look, I know things haven’t gone exactly as planned with the DCU so far, and James Gunn seemed pretty frustrated about that. But one thing he was really clear about? He *really* wants to keep working with Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. He was adamant about it, and honestly, that’s fantastic news. She’s amazing in the role, and I’m so glad he sees that.
Honestly, I really hope we see her back as the character! James Gunn and she have a fantastic working relationship, and he clearly adores her – he’s said she’s one of the best actors he’s ever collaborated with. So, yeah, he’s definitely hopeful too, and I am as well!
While it’s understandably frustrating for DC fans when announced projects seem stalled, it’s actually a positive sign. James Gunn has set a high standard for all DC Studios projects, and he’s not approving anything until it’s fully developed. Rushing into production with incomplete scripts or stories that don’t fit the overall plan has historically led to poor results and wasted money. Ultimately, Gunn’s commitment to quality is proving to be beneficial for the DCU, even if it means some anticipated projects are put on hold.
