When James Gunn and Peter Safran became the heads of DC Studios, their goal was to create a completely new universe of connected movies and shows. Initially, the plan was a fresh start with one central timeline for all DC heroes. However, the huge success of Matt Reeves’ The Batman led them to also create a separate label called “Elseworlds.” This allows DC Studios to make standalone films that don’t have to fit into the main DC Universe storyline, giving filmmakers more creative freedom. This decision has excited fans of the 2005 film Constantine, who have long hoped for a sequel starring Keanu Reeves.
James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently spoke with BobaTalks about the potential for a Constantine 2 movie. He confirmed he’s talked about the project with Keanu Reeves and likes the people involved, praising their talent. However, Gunn clarified that he hasn’t seen a script for the sequel yet. This means, despite reports that a new draft was ready for the studio, it hasn’t been submitted to him for review, making the film’s future uncertain.
Is Constantine 2 Ever Getting Made?

The first Constantine film, directed by Francis Lawrence, has gained a strong and devoted fanbase over the last twenty years, largely due to its dark and atmospheric horror style. Both Keanu Reeves and Lawrence have repeatedly said they want to revisit the character, and a sequel has been in the works since 2022. They’ve been focused on developing a story that lives up to the original, with both insisting any follow-up needs to be very mature and violent – embracing the grim and intense themes of the comic books more fully than the first film could. However, Warner Bros. Discovery recently created DC Studios and changed its approach to comic book adaptations, which has made Constantine 2‘s future less secure.
Okay, so here’s the deal with Constantine 2. Everyone involved is super passionate, and fans have been begging for it for ages, but it all comes down to the script now. James Gunn is really emphasizing that everything he’s doing with DC, especially these standalone “Elseworlds” stories, needs a fantastic screenplay. That puts a lot of pressure on the team behind Constantine 2 – their vision won’t get made unless Gunn loves the script. Honestly, I think that’s a good thing! It’s like a built-in quality check. If Constantine does come back to the big screen, it’ll be because the story is genuinely amazing, not just because people want to relive the original. For a character like John Constantine, who so many of us adore, a sequel built on a truly great script is exactly what we want – not just a nostalgia trip.
